TURKEY GETS A SECOND GP ON MONDAY AND NOW WE KNOW WHY! THE GRAND PRIX OF FINLAND IS CANCELED TODAY

The Grand Prix of Finland, originally scheduled for August 22 at the KymiRing, has been dropped from the 2021 Grand Prix Motocross schedule. The promoters cite a sudden increase of Covid-19 restrictions enforced by the Finnish government on the mass audience events and international travel. Infront Moto Racing, the series promoter, says, “The event will be replaced, on a future date to be announced soon.”

This has been a weird week for the MXGP series as they added a second Turkish Grand Prix to the 2021 schedule a couple days ago. It’s odd that Turkey would get a second Grand Prix, given that they have only ever held two GP races. It seems like it should have gone to one of the more establish continent-based events. The first 2021 Turkish Grand Prix will be held on Sunday, September 4, and the second 2021 Turkish Grand Prix will follow up on Wednesday, September 8.

Even with the addition of an extra Grand Prix in Turkey, the once 19-race 2021 MXGP series, has been saved—but that is counting the three fly-away races in Argentina and Indonesia at the end of the series. The three fly-away races are considered by many to be tentative and will most likely result in some of the remaining GPs also being turned into double-headers (if the three fly-aways run into government restrictions also).
