CARLSBAD FIGHTS BACK–DEC 20

On Dec 17 we ran a story on Carlsbad Raceway closing down due to an industrial project. Thankfully, the tide has changed and the Raceway will be open for at least another two years.
Here is the current news from the Union Tribune:

DRAG RACING TRACK COULD BE OPERATIONAL FOR TWO MORE YEARS

Carlsbad–Carlsbad Raceway, the only drag-racing track in San Diego County, will likely continue operating for as long as two more years while plans to build an industrial park on the property move forward.

Operators of the 37-year-old track in eastern Carlsbad are seeking an extension of their permit to run it. The extension request, which is to come before the city Planning Commission on Jan. 16, is expected to be approved, according to city planners.

“The staff doesn’t have any problem recommending approval,” said Mike Grim, of the Planning Department. “We haven’t received any complaints about the track.”

The track, north of Palomar Airport Road off Business Park Drive near the Vista city limits, attracts up to 100 drag and motorcycle racing enthusiasts during weekend events. Its future has been in question since the private property changed hands about five years ago.

Some racing fans became concerned about the track’s fate earlier this month when the City Council approved two industrial projects totaling 146 acres on and around it.

“With the approval of these projects, the raceway will close at some point,” Grim said. “But it won’t happen right away. It’ll take at least a year, and maybe as long as two years, for those projects to be processed.”

As part of the development deal with the city, the project’s builders will be required to complete Melrose Drive south from Vista to Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad. Vista officials and residents have been eager to have Melrose extended into Carlsbad to give residents there a more direct link to with Interstate 5.

The project’s builders also are required to auarantee financing of the eastern extension of Faraday Avenue.
