MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT

#WHIPITWEDNESDAY: NO WHIP, BUT NO HANDS

Brian Deegan 1996Brian Deegan spent quite a bit of time racing motocross before stepping into freestyle. He raced from 1993 to 1998 with a best motocross finish of fifth at Kenworthy’s Motocross Park National. Brian then went on to create a revolution in freestyle motocross with his brand Metal Mulisha. He also pioneered many new trick combinations within the sport and was the first to land a backflip 360 in competition. Brian would go on to win a gold medal in every competition available at the time. Today, we see Brian by his son Haiden Deegan’s side as Haiden looks to become one of the best riders in motocross. Haiden has had an incredible first year in the pro ranks and has become the next generation of Deegan domination.

TWO-STROKE SPOTLIGHT: LOREN BARNES’ 2010 YZ250

“Not a project/build, just my preferred dirt bike of the last two decades, and my fourth YZ250 (00, 02, 06, 10). The only thing slightly significant about the 2010 YZ250 TWO-stroke is that it was the last of the American Spec  YZ250’s with the higher compression and smaller silencer. While the stock exhaust note was nice, I decided to tighten up the look by putting on a full-length Pro Circuit 304 silencer and smaller side panels. Kept the stock pipe for the very usable low-to- mid power that can still rev pretty well. 50% pump gas and 50% leaded race gas makes the bike run perfect everywhere.”

“The subtle mods mostly follow what MXA has recommended through the years, except the suspension. As a 190-pound ‘professional practice rider’ who likes to jump and free-ride more than anything, the forks are stiffer .46 kg/mm OEM/KYB springs, and the shock is a stiffer 5.4 kg/mm Diverse spring. No need to modify the stock KYB SSS valving. The feel is firm, with a slight bias towards the forks feeling a bit stiffer, which is good for Supercross style riding, but still manageable on outdoor tracks.”

“The Parts list for this bike includes-Graphics www.willtopete.com, Pro Taper Evo Bars (Factory Suzuki / KTM bend), Renthal Kevlar Tapered Soft Grips, Pro Circuit 304 Silencer, Cycra Powerflow side panels (the stockers of this era were enormous), VForce3 Reed Valve, YZ450 Clutch Springs (per MXA ~10% stiffer), DID 520 ERT3 Chain, Works Connection Superlite Footpegs (do not like sharp pegs) and Dunlop MX33 Tires.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: KADE WALKER WINNING NGPC PRO II

I honestly didn’t really know what I was doing at first, as I was new to off-road; I was good in the technical stuff, but I didn’t have much experience holding it wide open, although I learned a lot during the season. Going into Havasu, I knew it was going to be super-hot, which stressed me a bit because I didn’t have that in Europe, but I’m good in the sand. My start wasn’t good, as usual, but I do better coming from behind. Once I got to the front, I just maintained and was able to take the win.

The ultimate test rider, Josh Mosiman, rides the GasGas MC450F under race conditions at the Hangtown National. It is one thing to ride and test a bike, but racing and testing is a great way to force yourself into putting the bike through its limits.
