REED AND SMITH TAKE THE MAXXIS U.S. OPEN–OCT 12
(press release courtesy of Clear Channel)
LAS VEGAS (October 11, 2003) – Before a sold out crowd of 10,032 fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Yamaha’s Chad Reed won the second of two motos in the Alpinestars 250cc Pro Class, giving him the $100,000 overall payout and championship. Yamaha’s Mike Brown won the Pro Circuit 125cc Pro Class, but his teammate, Kelly Smith, won the overall.
Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca holeshot the Alpinestars 250cc Pro Class, with night one winner David Vuillemin in second. During lap one, Carmichael moved into second, and secured first place when Fonseca crashed. Reed passed Carmichael for the lead and held on for the win.
“This was a learning race for me,” said Carmichael. “I need to be up front and after this race, I know what I need to work on.”
“I have a friend who moved to the U.S. from Australia and was injured, so I am going to donate the money to him,” said Reed. “Money is great and all but I want to give my money to a good cause.”
Smith earned the holeshot in the Pro Circuit 125cc Pro Class but was passed by Brown on the opening lap. Suzuki’s Andrew Short passed Smith for third late in the race before making his move on Brown. Short led for a mere two corners before colliding with Brown and going down. Brown held on for the win.
“Can’t stand the heat. Stay out of the kitchen,” said Brown after the race. “That’s racing ? I’m out there to win.”
