REM GLEN HELEN RACE REPORT: Controversy Over The Yellow Flags Ends In Widespread Penalties For Riders Who Sped Through Crash Site; Colton Udall Wins 450 Pro Class;

L&M Yamaha’s Larry Brooks showed up with their electric-powered fuel-injected YZ450F, but says that the team is retiring the battery-powered test bike as soon as they get their 2010 YZ450F’s.

REM GLEN HELEN RACE REPORT:
CONTROVERSY OVER THE YELLOW FLAGS ENDS IN WIDESPREAD PENALTIES FOR RIDERS WHO SPED THROUGH CRASH SITE; COLTON UDALL WINS 450 PRO CLASS

Colton Udal (51) won both motos of the 450 Pro class.

In a rare experience, a group of riders who ignored waving yellow flags were penalized by a race promoter. REM promoter Frank Thomason moved Over-50 Experts Ron Lawson and Greg Nelson back to 12th and 13th from their front runner spots and penalized former Saddleback Pro Andy Kirker one spot (from first to second) after they failed to slow down at the site of a crash. Not only did the three riders ignored the yellow flags warning of a crashed rider at the bottom of the downhill, but when they got there, in a pack, they knocked down another rider that had slowed at the crash site. At REM a waving yellow means slow down and do not jump. Their punishment was swift.

In the end, Jeff Fahey used a 4-3 to win the Over-50 Expert class in front of a top ten of Dennis Boulware (9-1), Baja hero Bob Rutten (3-7), Andy Kirker (2-9), Ken Ehlers (1-10), Randy Skinner (8-4), George Kohler (7-8), Dave Abelson and Ron Lawson (13-2).

THE PRO CLASS WINNERS WERE AS FOLLOWS:

450 Pro: Colton Udall went 1-1 in front of Shawn Hillion and Chris Hay.

250 Pro: Mark Tilley took the 250 Pro victory.

Over-40 Pro: Willy Musgrave took the fastest of the four 40-year-old classes (Novice, Intermediate Expert and Pro) with ease.

Bryan Friday (31) and Denny Davidow traded moto wins in the Over-40 Intermediate class, but Bryan holeshot and won the moto that counted most. ÿ

In the Over-40 Intermediates, Bryan Friday went 2-1 to best Denny Davidow’s 1-2. It was a very close fought battle for the win. Gregg Schellack was third, Mark Haupert fourth and Tim Harris fifth.

In a large Over-40 Novice class, Ron Shuler got the win with a 3-1 when first moto winner Rick Brosch posted an eighth in moto two. The bravest ride of the day was Patrick Johnson, brother of former Kawasaki and Indycar team manager Steve Johnson. Patrick brought his vintage Kawasaki out to get some practice before next weekend’s vintage race at Glen Heln. Patrick hung on for a 16th in moto one, but decided that REM was a little to rough for a 20-year-old bike and passed on moto two. ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿÿ

Jack Achey raced two classes and was rewarded with a fourth and a second.

IN THE OTHER CLASSES

Mike Gee took the Vet Novice win with 2-1 in front of Doug Reddings’s 1-3.

Max Groom won the 250 Novice class. Derik Brooks was second with a 5-1, Branden Brown was third and Jack Achey was fourth.

Ryan Surratt swept the 85 Intermediate class, while Jacob Rees took 85 Novices, Nick Gil the 150 Beginners, Jake Willis the 85 Beginners, Hayden Cole the 65 Advanced and Jimmy Willis the 65 Beginners. Kudos go to Ford Heit who raced a Cobra 50 in the 65 Beginner class and held his own against the faster bikes.

Ray Pisarski spent the day fork testing on MXA’s 2010 CRF250. It is relatively thankless task because you have to race with different forks in each moto (and they aren’t all good).

Leon Baird won the Over-50 Intermediate class in front of Greg Wolfe, Ray Pisarski and Gary Scott.

Former Over-60 World Vet Champion Bill Maxim beat former Over-40 Over-50 and Over-60 World Vet Champion (and Chad Reed’s Supercross winning mechanic) Alan Olson for the Over-60 Expert win. Dennis McAdam was third, Jody Weisel fourth, John Huegel fifth and Tom White sixth.

Shaun Heit was third overall in the Over-40 Expert class (although the poor guy is just skin and bones). Phil Dowell and Greg Pierce were first and second.

MXA test rider Billy Musgrave and John Minert won the 250 Intermediate and 450 Intermediate classes respectively.

Shaun Hillion got creative when it came to sponsorship. The 450 Pro is sponsored by Big Bear Log Works. As you might guess, Big Bear Log Works builds custom log cabin homes in the mountain community of Big Bear, California.

After a weekend off next week, REM races again Saturday, August 29. Practice starts at 9:00. For more info go to www.remsatmx.com
