• THE MOST POPULAR INJURY OF THE WEEK…TRY NOT TO JUMP ON THE BAND WAGON

This is how Nate Thrasher dislocated his hip and broke his collarbone at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in four photos.

It’s heart breaking that Nate Thrasher crashed at the Atlanta Supercross and dislocated hip and broke his collarbone. He will be missed as the 250 East reaches the stretch run. Suddenly, dislocated hips are in fashion, but only if you think hospital gowns and bed pans are fashionable.

Brian Medeiors on his Suzuki RM-Z250 dislocated his hip in the big start crash at the World Two-Stroke race.

MXA has seen a string of hip injuries as of late. Husqvarna’s Christian Craig dislocated his hip and elbow at Glendale two weeks ago. MXA test rider Brians Medeiros dislocated his hip and fractured some bones in the L1-L4 vertebrae in the big start crash in the Open Pro crash at the World Two-Stroke Championship.

Jon Ortner (N1R) has been splitting his time in 2023 between the National Grand Prix Championship (NGPC) and the big West Coast motocross events. His big crash on Shoei Hill at the World Two-Stroke Championship means that he is now focusing on healing up in time for the World Vet Championship in November.

And, our friend and test rider Jon Ortner also dislocated his hip and broke his femur in practice at the World Two-Stroke race last weekend as well. Jon has a GoFundMe account set up to help him pay his medical bills. You can help by going to https://www.gofundme.com/s?q=jon+ortner

• A MOMENT IN HISTORY FOR THE EVERTS FAMILY

Liam Everts celebrates with his family after getting his first Grand Prix podium in Trentino.

When Liam Everts got his first podium at the Trentino 250 Grand Prix last week for finishing second overall, the young KTM rider was joined in the celebration by his grandfather (left) and and father (right). There is nothing unusual about that, but what makes it unique is that Liam’s grandfather won the 1975 250 World Championship and the 1979, 1980 and 1981 FIM 125 World Championships, while his father Stefan won the 1991 FIM 125 World Championship and the 1995, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 FIM 250/450 World Championships and the 2001 and 2002 FIM 500 World Championships. That is 14 World Motocross Championship for the Everts clan.

•  SEE NEXT YEAR’S 2024 KTM 450SXF NOW! YES IT IS  8 MONTHS EARLY, BUT WHY COMPLAIN?

If you were expecting a new KTM 450SXF in 2024, then you were misled—no new engine and no new frame. The KTM 450SXF was new from the ground up in 2023, and  that included frame, suspension, engine and electronics. No manufacturer can afford to throw a new design out the window. The 2024 KTM 250SXF, 350SXF and 450SXF will get a new  compression shim stack to make the mid-valve damping feel more fluid and comfortable, but most of the bike will remain the same.

The 2024 WP shock’s high-speed compression damping has been refined to make each change on the compression dial equal to half the difference of the 2023 dial. That will give the rider more choices in how to fine tune the shock.

• WHO’S WHO IN THE SUPERCROSS ZOO HEADING TO NEW JERSEY

Ken Roczen (94), Chase Sexton (23) and Justin Barcia (51) shook up the status quo at Atlanta, by gapping Cooper Webb and John Tomac for the podium.

Jason Anderson’s wife had a baby the night before the Atlanta Supercross. He red-eyed into Atlanta and raced on adrenaline for timed qualifying and the heats, but paid the price of all the family news by main event time

Justin Barcia made the podium again and when the chips were down late in the 450 Main he was blazing fast and has now pulled 1 -point ahead of Ken Roczen for fourth overall.

AMA 450 SUPERCROSS POINTS STANDINGS
(After Atlanta)
1. Eli Tomac…292
2. Cooper Webb…286
3. Chase Sexton…275

9. Cjristian Craig …155
10. Justin Hill…140

It’s nice to see consummate professionals win by large margins, but when it happens every week, people start tuning out. The Lawrence brothers deserve all their wins, but they must excuse the fans for rooting against them. Hunter Lawrence (96) will finally get some competition when he has to face his brother this Saturday in New Jersey.

Tom Vialle (128) doesn’t have anything to prove. The two-time FIM 250 World Champion is just trying to learn the ropes in Supercross before he gets his chance to shine when the AMA 250 Nationals start on May 27. KTM signed him to survive Supercross and win the 2023 AMA 250 Nationals.

The number of healthy 250 West Supercross riders keeps dwindling each week to the point that Jett Lawrence has stopped going flat-out in the beginning of the main events now, because he knows he’ll catch up later.

• MXA AD OF THE WEEK: BSA’S LAST BIG WIN WAS 59 YEARS AGO

When Jeff Smith won the 1964 FIM 500 world Championship on his BSA 441, no one knew that the two-time champion would never win the title again. Why not? In two words, two-strokes. Although four-strokes dominated the World Motocross Championship from 1957 to 1964,  the arrival of the lightweight CZ, Husqvarna and Suzuki two-strokes spelled an end to the four-stroke era for the next 30 years.
