MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: IT’S TIME TO KISS PRO RACING BYE-BYE UNTIL THE FIRST WEEK IN JANUARY

• PLAYING CHASE AT THE BAJA 400: JON ORTNER’S FIRST TEST OF HIS BROKEN FEMUR

This is Jon Ortner on the Yamaha YZ250X that he broke his femur on at the 2023 World Two-Stroke Championship.

By Jon Ortner

Chasing the Baja 400 on my 2012 Triumph Bonneville was an experience of a lifetime. I had broke my femur and hip at the 2023 World Two-Stroke Championship and suffered through a very long rehab period. I told myself that as soon as I could get back on my bike I was going to do something wild and crazy.

My big comeback ride was to ride chase at the 2023 SCORE Baja 400. I would follow my friends and ex-teammates (at a safe distance and on roads that ran parallel to the race course). All in all I logged 852 miles on my Bonnie in this journey.

Friday morning I left Santa Barbara and made a short pit stop in San Clemente to pick up the ultimate wingman for this adventure, Craig Adams, who owns a record setting 18 SCORE Baja 1000 wins on motorcycles, in various Pro Classes. In fact, I was a teammate of Craig’s on 5 of those teams. Ironically, Craig’s motorcycle for this Baja 400 was the polar opposite of my Bonneville. Just last week I introduced Craig to Simi Valley Cycles Duane Kubes. Always the ultimate salesman, Duane set Craig up with “Friends & Family” pricing on the Yamaha’s ultimate adventure machine—the Tenere 700.

Kevin Ward (644x) launching off the start platform in downtown Ensenada, heading into the darkness and dust to stake his claim for a victory in Baja.

With a hug from his wife Terri and a few of the grandkids, Craig and I left San Clemente and rode south over the Tijuana border. The painfully long line on a Friday afternoon to cross into Baja turned out to be zero waiting for us, we simply followed the local motorcycle riders and rode around the thousands of stopped cars and trucks at the border, thankfully we had zero downtime getting into Mexico.

Louie Franco threading through the boulders as he approaches the pits at The Meadow.

Lifetime motocross and Baja racer, Andy Kirker, of SCORE Racing Moto Safety, has a home just below Ensenada at Estero Beach and Andy was our gracious host for Friday night. Having our motorcycles in secure parking overnight was a relief, knowing our bikes would still be there in the morning!

It is always fun seeing your friends in Mexico! Craig Adams with his 18 Baja 1000 wins, Louie Franco owns five Baja 1000 wins, and two-time AMA Supercross Champion and five-time AMA Motocross champion, Ricky Johnson.

When 4:30 a.m. rolled around on Saturday morning Craig and I made our way to the official start of the SCORE Baja 400 staging area. The spirit of Baja, along with us wanting to enjoy the event from the sidelines, turned into an incredible day for us. We chased after our friends racing motorcycles and driving Trophy Trucks.

Every stop we made, regardless of how remote the location, Craig and I saw friends, and made new ones. Come to find out, the myriads of families and groups of fans watching the race are truly generous with their shade, beverages in their coolers and knowledge of their favorite racers.

Along the way I stopped to shoot photos of the action. I actually shot 1200 photos and when I told Jody I would send them to him, he said, “Nope! Send me five photos and you can show the other 1195 to your family on Thanksgiving.” So, here they are. Enjoy!

• SUPERMOTOCROSS PLAYOFF POINTS HEADING TO SATURDAY’S TRIPLE POINTS FINALE

These are the SuperMotocross Playoff points from three sources; (1) The points paid to the riders who qualified for the SuperMotocross Playoffs by combining their Supercross and AMA National point together. (2) The first round at Z-MAX Speedway which  paid 25 points to win. (3) The second round at Chicagoland which paid 50 points (double points) to win. (3) And the final round in the Los Angeles Coliseum this Saturday night which will will pay 75 points to the winner (triple points).

The bonus points for the combined Supercross and Nationals combined are a big deal. If SuperMotocross just used the race results from the races, the placings would be very different because under the Olympic scoring system that they are using for each event Sexton’s 1-3 beats Lawrence’s 4-1 as does Roczen’s 2-2. In the 250 class, Jo Shimoda’s 1-2 beats Hunter Lawrence’s  8-1 (and so does Haiden Deegan’s 3-3).

Chase Sexton won round one and was third in round two. He leads on total points with 90 points.

Jett Lawrence was 4th in Charlotte and won in Joliet, Illinois. He is 2 points behind Chase Sexton.

Ken Roczen was second at both Charlotte and Joliet, but only raced one AMA National, so Ken is currently third in total 450 points at 80.

• TAKE A LAP OF THE LOS ANGELES COLISEUM SUPERMOTOCROSS FINALE TRACK

MXA COVER OF THE WEEK: “JOHN PERRY’S $1000 CRAIGSLIST WONDER BIKE”

The July 2021 cover featured John Perry’s basket case 2005 Yamaha YZ125 that he found for sale in Aztec, New Mexico, on Craigslist for $1000. When he got it back home to Durango, Colorado, he could see that it was in bad shape. But hope springs eternal and he cleaned it up and gave it three kicks and it fired right up. He decided to work on it a little, but just enough to take it out for a ride. From there, he would decide what to do it with it. At the  track, it ran pretty well for a very old bike. He set it aside for a month and then made the smartest move he ever made, he called MXA’s Dennis Stapleton to inquire about getting some Wiseco parts for the rebuild and Dennis told him that he  was looking for a used YZ125 for an MXA project bike. Dennis asked John if he’d be willing to let him use his bike. John said to himself, “Who in their right might mind would say no to an opportunity to have MXA take over his Craigslist YZ125 bike and complete it for him.” John only had three requests; (1) He needed it finished in time for the World Two-Stroke Championship,  (2) He didn’t want a big-bore engine. He wanted a stock-size 125. (3) John wanted to handle the graphics design himself.

What you see on the July 2021 cover of MXA was John Perry’s $1000 Yamaha YZ125 that would have cost him $7300 if Dennis Stapleton hadn’t stepped in to finish the bike for him. Oh yeah, John finished 10th overall in the Over-50 Expert class at the World Two-Stroke Championship.

• CRAZY MOMENTS YOU’LL NEVER SEE AGAIN: JOEL ROBERT’S ANTIC

We highly doubt that you’ve ever see another World Motocross Champion shove his bike in the back of mini pick-up truck to get to the races.

Joel Robert loved the Wild Wild West and when he came to America for the first time be bought a six shooter and Roger Decoster said he loved to shoot it out the window as they drove to the next race.

Joel Robert was not a follower of the Aldon Baker school of training. Joel loved to eat what he wanted, drink beer and smoke cigarettes. That diet worked well enough for Joel to win six 250 World Championships.

Joel loved fast cars and fast horses. This is the horse. Joel was sponsored “Racing” cigarettes.

This is the car.

WORLD VET “CUP OF NATIONS” 2023 RULES PACKAGE

Glen Helen owner Dr. Bud Feldkamp holds the World Vet Cup perpetual  trophy that has the name of each winning county engraved on it.

Glen Helen Raceway would like to thank everyone that participated in the 2022 World Vet Cup of Nations. It was a huge success and there were even tears of joy on the podium. The World Cup of Nations” is a special two-moto race, designed to highlight all of the nations that are represented at the Dubya World Vet Motocross Championship. It requires three riders from the same country on each World Vet Cup team. Unfortunately, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the borders were closed around the world, the rules were loosened to allow a foreign-born, passport-holding rider to borrow available riders from other countries to fill out that his World Vet Cup team. It was an emergency procedure to keep the World Vet Cup going—it was never planned to become a permanent fixture.

Glen Helen wants the World Vet Cup of Nations event to return to its original concept starting with the this year’s race. It is held for proud riders from Ireland, Germany, France, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Spain and the 15 other countries in attendance to represent their country…and fly their flag. Ringers will no longer be allowed!

The goal isn’t to write new rules for rules sake, but to return the “Cup of Nations” back the original rules to keep the international “spirit” of this race alive and to ensure it remains a prestigious race for many years to come.

The race bibs come in national colors with the proper flag. The color of the upper portion of the bib indicates the age group of the rider. Each age group starts the World Vet Cup motos in its own wave off the start and is scored separately from the other age groups.

HERE ARE THE UPDATED RULES FOR THE 2023 WORLD VET CUP OF NATIONS

(1) Passports or birth certificates: To be deemed a valid representative of a country, the rider must possess and present an official birth certificate or passport from the country being represented. The hope is to have teams made up of proud racers representing their nation—not ringers from America.

(2) Filling a spot: All three riders should be from the nation they are representing, however, in special circumstances, a minimum of two riders on the team must meet the criteria of rule #1. If 1 of the riders is not from the country they are representing or cannot provide an official birth certificate or passport, there will be a 5-point penalty assessed to that rider’s overall finish points for each moto.

(3) Scoring system: World Vet Cup racing consists of two motos, The first moto is on Saturday and the second moto is on Sunday. Points are scored based on the finishing positions within each age group. A country whose team finished 1st in the Over-30, 1st in the Over-40 and 1st in the Over-50 classes would have a team total of 3 points for that day’s motos. The national team with the lowest score for both days combined will be the overall World Vet “Cup of Nations” Championship team.

(4) Class ages: Each national team will consist of three riders who meet the age requirements to participate in the Over-30, Over-40 and Over-50 classes. Any rider over 30 years of age can fill the Over-30 spot on a team. Only riders 40 years old or older can fill the Over-40 spot on the team and only riders over 50 years old can fill the Over-50 spot on the team. Paradoxically, riders over 50 years old can fill any spot in the Over-30, Over-40 and Over-50 classes.

(5) Race bib mandate. National race bibs, with that nations flag on it, will be provided to each rider of the country being represented. Failure to wear your bib will result in a 5-point penalty for your team.

It is best to start forming your national team as soon as possible, with back-up riders if necessary. Each nation is allowed to field as many as three separate teams! The World Vet Cup of Nation application forms are available now. Click Here to register. Don’t delay.
