• ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT “WORLD VET WEEK” AT GLEN HELEN

Get ready for the pinnacle of motocross excitement at Glen Helen Raceway! It’s almost time for the 39th Annual Dubya World Vet MX Championships, taking place from November 3 to November 5, 2023.

GATES HOURS

The front gate opens and closes at these times: Wednesday, November 1 (2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.mm), Thursday, November 2 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.), Friday, November 3 (6:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m.), Saturday, November 4th (5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.) and Sunday, November 5th (5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).

GATE FEES

Gate fees include $30 per bike for Friday practice, a $20 per person weekend pass, and $10 per person for Sunday-only access.

PRE-REGISTRATION

Pre-registration is now open, with a new requirement for all riders to have their own transponders. Skip the check-in line if you register online! Prices incrementally increase, so register early. post-entry fees are $150 for the first class and $140 for the second class.

RACE FORMAT

This legendary event features a three-moto format, starting on Saturday and continuing through Sunday until all racing is complete. However, special categories like Over-40 Pro, Over-30 Pasha 125, and Over-50 Pasha125 Pro Race will take place on Saturday, while Over-30 Pasha125 Pro, Over-50 Pasha 125 Pro Race and the Dubya World Vet Cup will run on Sunday. Practice starts at 7:30 a..m. on Saturday and 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, with racing starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and 8:00 am on Sunday.

MINIUMUM AGE

The youngest a rider at the World Vet can can be is 25 years old as of November 5, 2022

Lars Larsson is 82 years old and is a four-time World Vet Champion.

ACTUAL AGE

Don’t be surprised if you are required to show your driver’s license to prove how old you are at sign-up. This applies to every age group. We don’t accept rifers in the Over-30 class who will be 30 in two weeks, ot two days. Riders must ride in the class that corresponds to their actual age.

Yes, it is 22 stories tall.

DOUBLE CLASSING IT

In the past many riders, who raced in the Over-40, Over-50 or Over-60 Expert classes (or any of the age-graded Expert class,) would moved down to Intermediate when they went down an age group (like from Over-40 to Over-35) and would drop a skill level when they went to the younger age groups (i..e from Over-40 Expert to Over-35 Intermediate). This is no longer allowed. Riders are free to drop down to race in younger age groups, but if they are an Expert is their primary class, they are an Expert in any other class.

After Saturday’s races they hold a big party in the Glen Helen Museum to honor the Edison Dye Lifetime Achievement Award winner. This year it  will be Troy Lee.

WORLD VET CUP

For 2023, the World Vet Champions World Vet Cup will require that every rider on each three-man National team have a passport or birth certificate from the nation he wants to represent. If the team must use a use a rider from another country to fill out there team, they will be assessed a 5-place penalty to that rider’s moto scores.

• GODSPEED! DICK HAMER (1948-2023)

Dick Hamer, the long-time publisher of Motorcycle Dealer News, passed away last week at the age of 74.

Dick Hamer came to the West in 1973 with a degree Business Administration from the University of Illinois, where he established a career in the Motorcycle Trade Publication Industry. From 1973 to 1985 he was publisher and sales manager for Motorcycle Dealer News. He then became marketing director for the Motorcycle and Accessory Trade Expos, before moving on to take a position as Vice President and Accounts Management Supervisor for the Burroughs and Associates Public Relations firm. During this time Dick was founder and director of the Pro Rider Benefit Fund, a philanthropic non-profit providing financial assistance to seriously injured American professional motorcycle racers.

In 1989, Dick made a major career change to become a licensed real estate broker in Orange County, California, wherehe became a top producing agent until his retirement in 2019. He felt blessed to have two careers that he loved. Besides his passion for two and four-wheeled “speed,” Dick had varied interest outside of motorcycling. He developed cactus gardens in every house he lived in, loved scuba diving, traveled extensively and, if you knew Dick, you knew that he knew every word to every Merle Haggard song. His truest passion, however, was for his family and friends.

Dick contributed regularly to many philanthropic causes dear to his heart, including Hands Across America, Habitat for Humanity, The Cousteau Society, The Audubon Society, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, Gary Sinese Foundation and local rescue missions. Dick loved to say he “felt the need…the need for speed.” He is now looking at all the pain and discomfort from his review mirror. He was one of the good ones and will be missed by all. Dick is survived by his wife Vivian, stepchildren Jenny and Michael, one grandchild Nathan, and six siblings—Joe, MaryAnn, Jim, John, Theresa, and Joanne.
