CHILLMUSQUIN

Glen Helen’s AMA National and Grand Prix track is famous for its big hills and grand vistas, not its jumps (apart from the Triple Step-Up), but hidden up in the Canyon section of the track is a massive step-up that asks for all an engine can give. In this Mark Chilson photograph Marvin Musquin crawls up on the tank of his KTM 450SXF to coax a little extra height out of it. If he gets it, he will be rewarded by a smooth landing and quick access to the 180-degree bowl turn on the other side. If he comes up short, his KTM will clank and shutter off the top—costing him precious milliseconds. Also hidden in this photos are the mountain towns of Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear in the 8000-foot tall mountains on the horizon. The big white building in the background is an 875,000 square-foot distribution center on what’s left of the iconic Route 66. That is one massive warehouse.
