AMA NATIONAL MOTOCROSS: 3-1, 1-3 & 2-2 FOR REED, RYAN & RYAN; TYLA RATTRAY WINS 250 CLASS

There were four different moto winners at Budds Creek AMA National motocross, but when the day was done the points leaders coming into the event where the points leaders heading to the next event.

Plus, Mike Brown went 12-13 to push his points total for the 2011 season to 31 points (Mike only raced two races). That is enough points for Mike to keep his National Number 3 for 2012 (under new AMA rules a rider has to earn 25 points to keep his permanent number).

Additionally, Josh Grant made his return to racing after five months off. Josh ended up tenth overall with an 8-10 day. Not bad considering how long Josh has been on the couch. On a sad note: Now that Grant is back at Team Honda, Kevin Windham is going home. His fill-in role at Team Honda was only for the first four races. Windham is currently sixth in the 450 National standings (and only 6 points out of fifth).

450 CLASS

Ryan Villopoto won the first moto easily with Ryan Dungey second and points leaser Chad Reed third.

In the second moto, Mike Alessi proved the power of the KTM 450SXf again with a holeshot and an early lead. Chad Reed got by Alessi on lap three (as did Dungey, Villopoto and Kevin Windham). Ryan Dungey was like a yo-yo behind Reed. Ryan would close the gao and then lengthen it, only to close it again and then fall off the pace. Reed rode a steady pace and never faltered on a magnificently rough track.

In the end, Reed, Villopoto (who finished a very distant third) and Dungey all tied with four points apiece. Reed’s 3-1 took the win with Villopoto’s 1-3 in second Dungey in third…but since no one gained on Reed, he left Budds with he same 15 point lead that he entered the race with.

“I was bummed after the first moto,” said Reed. “I just didn’t have the pace. The Ryan’s showed me what’s up. I came out in the second and gave it all I had. I’m pumped. We made some changes to the bike and it paid off. I’m excited to come out and win that second moto. These guys are on their game this season and it hasn’t been easy.”

“It was a good day, I just couldn’t make it happen,” said Dungey. “I felt like I needed to make a move (on Reed), but it never happened. I had to come from behind a couple times. It’s what racing is all about. It’s a man’s sport and it’s challenging. We’ll just keep moving forward.”

250 CLASS

Pro Circuit has own the 2011 AMA 250 National motocross Championships and nothing changed in Maryland. Dean Wilson won the first moto with teammates Tyla Rattray in second and Broc Tickle third.

Rattray would come back to win the second moto and take the overall…when Wilson got a bad start and could only work up to third. Rattray’s 2-1 beat Wilson’s 1-3.

“I think it’s important in a championship to be up front,” said Rattray. “It’s important to be on podium as much as you can, and that’s what I’ve done so far. I just want to get big points at each round and stay consistent. Having such strong competitors makes you dig deeper, and I just want it really bad.”

The Pro Circuit Kawasaki team has won every moto and every 250 race so far this season.

The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship continues next weekend with Round five at Thunder Valley MX Park, in Lakewood, Colorado.
