PRESTON PETTY CELEBRATION OF LIFE

Motorcycle Industry Gathers to Honor a Legend: Preston Petty

Where would the motorcycle industry be without plastic fenders? Well, thanks to Preston Petty, you don’t have to deal with that challenge – he figured it out over five decades ago. The AMA Hall of Famer passed in January, and due to the pandemic, his celebration of life was pushed back so it could be held in conjunction with the 5th Annual Hopetown Reunion, Sunday, November 6, 2022, Hummingbird Nest Ranch, Simi Valley, California.

In the world of motorcycles, Preston Petty was what baseball would call a 5-tool player: First, he was a winner – Preston started racing when he was 16, and in 1970, used his winnings to start his company. Second, he was versatile – Preston competed in everything from motocross to International Six Days Trials (ISDT), scrambles to flat track, often taking the checkered flag. Third, he was a computer nerd – Preston worked as a computer programmer/engineer on the Apollo space mission. Fourth, he was an innovator – while everyone else was using steel or fiberglass, Preston created a line of indestructible plastic fenders that revolutionized the industry. Fifth, Preston never stopped innovating – in his 70s, he built an electric flat track race bike to prove to the world that EVs can be competitive. That’s not  all – Preston was also an avid aviator – in fact, he circumnavigated the globe in his small private plane.

Renowned artist, Dave Maestrejuan, painted a unique portrait of Preston, capturing the highlights of his exemplary life. After the celebration of life, the painting will hang at the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.

Preston Petty was truly a one-of-a-kind individual, and his celebration of life will be truly epic to honor the man who helped revolutionize our industry.

FOR SALE! INHOUSE EMPLOYEE’S 1984 SUZUKI RM250

Looking for a collector bike to race at the vintage races or two-stroke races? This 1984 RM250 has all the bones needed to for a great project bike.

The best thing about this bike is that it is completely original, save for the added spark arrestor. The bike is in good shape for a 38 year old bike. The engine has compression and would start if the carb and tank were cleaned out as the bike has been sitting for a while. Our in-house guy is looking to get $3000 for the well taken care of machine. Contact [email protected] for inquires.

If you buy this bike, MXA we will through in some grips for you! Also whoever raced this bike sure had a strange lever position!

If you are asking what is on top of the seat, that is the original kickstand that came with the bike. Can’t believe he didn’t toss that useless piece on metal in the trash after all these years.

MXA MOTO TIP // USING A STARTING DEVICE IS A MUST

MOTO TIP. This is a must-have item for starting on dirt. A holeshot device keeps the forks compressed, allowing you to put more power to the rear wheel without doing a huge wheelie. You can stay on the throttle instead of backing off to keep the front end down, and you will be able to lean farther back without worrying that you might loop out. If your track has a concrete start, don’t waste time with a holeshot device—just work on technique. Although many AMA Pros don’t use Launch Control, it is a valuable tool for most rider—with one caveat—you have to learn its secrets. Some Launch Controls allow you to turn the throttle all the way until the bike hits the rev limiter, while some work best at three-quarter throttle. Additionally, you need to know how to get out of launch control on a short start—since you may not get to third gear. We know riders on tight Supercross tracks, who shift up to third and back down to second coming out of the first corner just to get rid of the muted feel of Launch Control once on the track. Did you know that KTM and Husky Launch Control system turn off if you shut the throttle off more than 30%? This is great in the first turn, but not so good if you blip the throttle before the gate drops. All the Launch Control systems are different and what works on a KTM may not work on a Kawasaki. And, nothing you know about Launch Control will work on a Honda, because it doesn’t come with it.

MINI PRODUCT TEST // MOTO TASSINARI V-FORCE 4R REED VALVE

The V-Force 4R reed valve has a new manifold, reed cage and air guide. The reed-tip surface is 10 percent larger, and the new pre-curved reed petals ensure a better seal. Plus, the frontal area of the central wing has been reduced by 15 percent to improve aerodynamics.

VERDICT: If we had to complain, we’d say that we expected a bigger improvement over OEM, but that is unrealistic on a KTM or Husky because their stock reed-valve system is a Moto Tassinari copy. We love this reed on a Yamaha.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK // HAIDEN DEEGAN ON WHY HE LINED UP FOR MOTO 2 AFTER HIS BIG CRASH

Haiden Deegan 2022 Ironman National

Yes, I was banged up, but I wanted to race the second moto. I wanted more time on the track as I knew it would be rougher, and I wanted more experience racing the guys. But I had a bad gate pick, which resulted in a bad start, and getting taken out by the third turn. Ultimately, I finished twenty fourth in the moto.
