MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT

#WHIPITWEDNESDAY

Rider: Haiden Deegan

Haiden Deegan is one of the most prominent figures in motocross today. He currently leads the points of the 2024 AMA 250 motocross series and has won the first three of four races. Through amateur racing, he was one of the more dominant riders as well. He started racing at Loretta Lynn’s in the 4-6-year-old 50cc classes and went all the way up to the B class. He never raced Pro Ssport or A class as an amateur as he went directly into professional racing from the B class. He won Loretta’s seven times and has one of the best track records at the ranch. However, through amateur racing, he did run into some controversy when he was disqualified from Oak Hill Amateur National for running a bored-out engine on  his 50. Nonetheless, he was still the fastest rider on the track. When he went Pro, it took a few races for his talent to show, but he was able to grab the win at Red Bud in his first full outdoor season. He now is currently the man to beat in the 250 Nationals and has been the fastest on the track week in and week out.

IF THEY DON’T STOP JETT’S MOMENTUM NOW THEY NEVER WILL

Jett Lawrence was the series leader heading into Hangtown.

Jett Lawrence gave an opening to the other riders in the series at Hangtown when he had a scary crash down one of the hills. He was not able to gain any points in that moto which sent him back on the leaderboard. But recently Jett Lawrence has been rebuilding his momentum  by taking the wins at both Thunder Valley and High Point. Jett has been the most dominant rider all season long and currently sits third in points behind Hunter Lawrence and Chase Sexton but not by much. If Hunter and Chase want to have a chance to maintain this lead they need to put a stop to the Jett’s momentum. Quick.

MOST CONSISTENT

Hunter Lawrence is the current points leader of the motocross series.

The most consistent rider thus far has been Hunter Lawrence. Though he has not grabbed his first win yet this season, he has not been off of the podium in a single weekend. This has given him the points lead going into round five at Southwick. Though his brother Jett is building race wins, the old saying goes “Consistency wins championships” and if Hunter Lawrence can keep himself on the podium each round, he has a good chance to do so. Though Jett has been the faster rider, Hunter is starting to come around and will most likely grab a win before the season’s end.

ASK THE MXPERTS: IS IT SMOKING OR IS IT STEAMING?

You don’t have to worry too much when an engine emits steam; you have to worry when it stops steaming.

WHEN SMOKE IS REALLY STEAM

Dear MXperts,
My Honda CRF450 overheats while I’m racing it. If it is a hot day or a deep sand track, when I come into the pits after a moto, I can smell boiling antifreeze. When the radiator cools down, I have to add water. What can I do to stop this?

You have almost limitless options, but we will only focus on six things:

(1) Heat. Most racers want increased horsepower, which comes from more aggressive ignition timing, leaner fuel mixtures, aftermarket pipes, and increased compression. But factory teams know that heat is a byproduct of power, and if they can’t keep the heat under control, it doesn’t matter how much effort they put into producing power. You gotta get rid of heat to make more speed.

(2) Radiators. To get the most out of your radiators, be sure that air entering the radiators isn’t obstructed by dirt, bent fins or damaged louvers. Check that the air doesn’t have an easier path around the radiators, but instead is forced through them. Finally, for air to blow through the radiators, it needs an unobstructed path to escape after exiting the radiators. Aftermarket radiators increase cooling performance by increasing the surface areas of heat-transferring components (the water in the radiators, the radiator’s core size and the condition of the radiator’s cooling fins). Plastic companies make radiator wings, number plates and front fenders that seek to get more air through the radiators with vents and ducting.

(3) Water pumps. Aftermarket water pumps and impellers, like the Boyesen Supercooler, measurably reduce engine temperatures by improving circulation with better ducting and more efficient impellers.

(4) Hoses. Increasing the radius of any sharp bends in the plumbing with a hose kit helps the liquid flow through the system with less cavitation (air bubbles) in the water, as does eliminating the bolt-on Y-junctions, which slows down water velocity. As for coolants and additives, they often make exaggerated claims, but special coolants do a good job.

(5) Fuel octane. If you run fuel with too low of a fuel octane rating for your engine’s state of tune, it can cause an uneven combustion burn, leading to hot spots in the cylinder and detonation. A lower-compression piston can reduce the combustion chamber temperature, but if the engine has to work harder to produce the same amount of power in a given situation, it will have to run hotter to achieve that desired output. Boosting performance with a high-compression piston is fine, as long as you run appropriately high-octane fuel.

(6) Steam. When the TV announcers say that a bike is smoking at a mud race, that is not smoke; it is actually steam coming out of the radiator overflow tubes. The most common cause of turning your internal combustion engine into a steam engine is over-use of the clutch. In mud races, riders rely on the clutch to keep the bike moving; but even in dry conditions, the clutch can cause an engine to overheat if it is used in every corner. The design of a clutch, with its friction plates rubbing against each other, is an incredible source of engine heat. Lay off the clutch if you can.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: JUSTIN COOPER HIGH POINT UPDATE

“The day went well. I struggled a little bit in practice. It started out pretty wet and we got some weather, so I rode a little bit timid in practice, but in the motos it came around. I felt really good in the first moto, then I laid it down when I was in third, and I ended up fourth in that one. In the second moto, I got shuffled around in the first turn, so I was pretty far back, but I actually felt better in that moto. I was working my way through the pack, and sixth was all I could really do in that one. Overall, I was just happy with where we left off. Usually, I’m not so good at this track, so I was happy to find a good flow.”

When you’ve been sitting for a while in between motos, and then go put out a full effort it’s easier to get more tired early. The majority of the riders will get in a quick cycle before the moto elevating their heart rate a preparing themselves for the moto ahead.
