EVERY SAN DIEGO SUPERCROSS WINNER SINCE 1980 — STARTING WITH MIKE BELL
Note that Jeremy McGrath won five San Diego Supercrosses in a row from 1993 to 1998. Chad Reed is the winningest rider in San Diego history, winning six times over a nine-year span. Ryan Dungey won both San Diego rounds in 2016. This year there is only one San Diego Supercross and Ken Roczen gets his name on the list for the first time.
TEAM YAMAHA FALTERS AS COOPER WEBB STRUGGLES
Cooper Webb (2) and Chad Reed are not in the top ten in Supercross points standings. Reed has a good excuse as he had a run-in with Weston Peick at A1—and Weston stayed up, while Chad went down. Webb finished 10th at A1 and 14th in San Diego, He is already 32 points behind points leader Ken Roczen. Reed ended up 20th after his incident with Peick at A1 and was 9th in San Diego
SAM SUNDERLAND WINS 2017 DAKAR RALLY
Brit Sam Sunderland took his first Dakar win in Buenos Aires after several failed attempts in previous years, ensuring the trophy stays with the official KTM team. Former MX3 motocross World Champion Matthais Walkner was second, 6 minutes back, with a third KTM, ridden by Gerard Farres Guell in third. The first Yamaha was Adrien Van Beveren in fourth. Early leader Joan Barreda, who was penalized an hour for illegal fuel stop, ended up fifth, with another MX3 World Motocross Champion, Pierre Renet, in sixth. For American fans who remember when Joaquim Rodriques raced in the USA from 2003 through 2007 (with a best finish of 3rd at the Pontiac 250 East class in 2005), he finished 10th overall in Dakar. On a side note: Multi-time motorcycle category winner Stephane Peterhansel defended his crown at the wheel of a Peugeot to win the car class.

COULD NEXT YEAR’S KTM COST $20,000? THE U.S. GOVERNMENT THINKS SO
We went through this back in 1984 when Harley-Davidson got relief via a 49.4% tariff imposed on Japanese street bikes over 750cc, which the Japanese overcame by selling 700c street bikes. Now, because of a long-standing trade dispute over European Union regulations against American beef, the Office of United States Trade Representative wants to impose a 100% tariff on European motorcycles from 51cc to 500cc. Although this tariff hasn’t been passed yet, the AMA and the European motorcycles companies will have to launch an aggressive defense in the next month. To be clear, it isn’t just European motorcycles that will be hit by the tariff, but a whole laundry list of other products and European imports. However, motorcycle companies who will be affected by the tariff include all machines made in European Union countries, including KTM, Husqvarna, Aprilia, Beta, Gas Gas, SWM, Sherco and TM. Forget about the hardship on potential KTM or Husqvarna motocross, enduro, offroad and dual purpose riders, think about the economic impact on American dealerships and their employees. Motorcycle sales will suffer—which will trickle down to the aftermarket sector.
