• THE BIG FOUR JOIN FORCES IN HYDROGEN MOTORCYCLE ENGINE DEVELOPMENT

This is the 1000cc Kawasaki Hydrogen engine that was shown at EICMA last year. The hydrogen will be carried in quick-change cannisters.

Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki have announced that they have formed a technological research association called HySE (Hydrogen Small mobility & Engine technology) to develop hydrogen-powered engines for motorycles. They understand that the use of hydrogen poses technical challenges, including fast flame speed and a large region of ignition, which often result in unstable combustion, not to mentiond the limited fuel tank capacity of motorycles. The members of HySE are committed to conducting fundamental research, capitalizing on their wealth of expertise and aim to work together with the joint mission of establishing a design standard for small mobility’s hydrogen-powered engine, and of advancing the fundamental research endeavors in this area.

The idea is for the Big Four Japanese motorcycle manufacturer to share the technological workload:
(1) Honda will focus on research on the model-based development of hydrogen-powered engines.
(2) Suzuki will study the functionality, performance and reliability of the hydrogen-powered engines.
(3) Yamaha and Kawasaki will do gands-on research using real hydrogen-powered engines and study the hydrogen refueling system and hydrogen tanks for small mobility engines.
(4) And, Toyota will lend its know-how from designing  large hydrogen-fueled power units for four-wheel vehicles.

• WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WIN THE AMA 450 NATIONALS? 25 YEARS OF AMA 450 CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS TOTALS

Ricky Carmichael is the winningest rider in the history of the AMA 450 Nationals with seven Championship seasons and two of them were perfect seasons.

How many points does it take to win the AMA 450 National Championship? The correct answer is one point more than the second place guy, but the ultimate answer is 600 points (which requires winning every moto of a 12-race series). There have been three perfect seasons in AMA Motocross; Ricky Carmichael in 2002 and 2004 and James Stewart in 2008. Ricky also came within 6 points of having a third perfect season when he scored 594 points in 2005.

James Stewart 2006James Stewart only won a single AMA 450 National Championship, but it was a doozy in 2008

Zach Osborne won the 450 title with the least points in 2020 ,when he only score 355 points—although there were only nine races that year because of Covid-19 restrictions—and Zach won four of the nine. As for the upcoming 2023 450 series, a perfect score would be 550 points—because there are only 11 Nationals in 2023 compared to the normal 12 Nationals.

Zach Osborne 2020 Fox Raceway National-55

Zach Osborne scored the least title-winning points of the last 25 years, but only because there were only nine Nationals in 2020.

• WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS, YOU STOP DANCING! FINAL 2023 SUPERCROSS POINTS STANDINGS

There is no doubt that Chase Sexton benefitted from the rash of injuries that reduced the 450 field down to just two factory riders by the final round, and one of them, Ken Roczen, suffered a knee injury on lap that put him on the disabled list also. However, Sexton  won the 2023 AMA 450 Supercross Championship because he scored points in all 17 rounds and won six rounds outright. He deserves the crown.

FINAL AMA 450 SUPERCROSS POINTS STANDINGS

There is lots of talk that Honda should move 250 East Champion Hunter Lawrence to the 450 class also, but why would they when Hunter is their best shot at winning the 250 National Championship this year. With Chase and Jett holding down the fort in the 2023 450 Nationals, they don’t need Hunter. They can keep him in reserve just in case the rumors of Chase switching teams in 2024 are true.
