TWO-STROKE TUESDAY | 1986 HONDA CR250 MXDN REPLICA BUILD
“Hey MXA. This is my no expense spared 1986 Honda CR250 Motocross de Nations replica. Every nut and bolt is either new or replated to shine like it did on the showroom floor. Tom Morgan Racing ported the cylinder, modified the head for race gas and balanced the crankshaft. The transmission was REM finished and had a Hinson clutch basket installed. HRC replica clutch, ignition and power valve covers were sourced from Italy to give it a factory look. The forks and shock body were hard anodized and resprung and valved by Pro Action in Pennsylvania. The wheels were rebuilt with new Excel rims custom anodized to match the 1980s Honda gold color. I also disassembled a set of Rental bars and had them anodized gold to match the rims (Rick Johnson’s bike didn’t have gold bars, but the HRC guys in Europe ran them and I think it looks cool!). All of the plastic is OEM, restored by Plastic Renovations.
“I managed to get on the list for a limited production run of a Rick Johnson replica pipe and silencer from Pro Circuit and it sounds great! Matt at Throttle Jockey created the custom graphics including number plates that have the correct color green and font as RJs bike. I built the bike with the intention of racing it but came out so nice I haven’t been able to bring myself to get it dirty yet. I have ridden it down the street though and it runs great! Thanks.”—John Voegtli.
