For the sixth consecutive AMA National motocross Ryan Dungey claimed the overall victory, but he finally lost a moto to Mike Alessi. Meanwhile, in the 250 class, Justin Barcia took his second victory of the season in front of Eli Tomac and Blake Baggett.

450 CLASS:

Mike Alessi grabbed the holeshot in moto one with Josh Grant and Jake Weimer in second and third. Ryan Dunegy was in fourth palce and by the second lap had moved into second place and began to apply pressure on Alessi. It was only a matter of time, but the normally unflappable KTM rider blew through a powder berm and went down. He remounted in second place as Alessi got away, but it didn’t take him long to catch back up to Alessi, but Mike held on for the moto win. His first in several years.

In the second moto, Ryan Dungey grabbed the holeshot and opened by a 20-second lead. His 2-1 would give him his sixth 450 National win of 2012. Alessi tied on points, but his 1-2 was only good enough for second place.

Ryan Dungey said, “It was fun! was riding in second (in the first moto) and I was up on him, but I had a hard time making the pass. I had a streak going and I was happy with it, but at the end of the day, winning every moto doesn’t get the championship done. If anything, it was a kick in motivation to go a little harder, which I did in the second moto.” Dungey’s lead in the 450 class standings remains at 80 points over Alessi. 80 points is the equivalent of a three-moto lead (plus five extra points). There are eight moto left in the 2012 season.

Marvin Musquin got to style for awhile after a tough season. In moto one Musquin got the holeshot and pulled away from the pack. Marvin led the majority of the first moto in an attempt to win his first-ever AMA National moto. Sadly for Musquin, on lap 11 Barcia and Tomac passed him. Musquin ended the first moto in third.

In the second moto, Barcia opened up a slight lead over Pro Circuit’s Blake Baggett, who had finished sixth in moto one. Just as with Marvin Musquin in moto one, Barcia got passed on lap 13 ? by one of Baggett’s trademark locomotive passes (where he builds up a head of steam and just goes by on the outside).

Barcia’s second-place effort in the final moto was enough to claim the overall victory, with Tomac in second (2-3) and Baggett in third (6-1).

“The first moto was awesome, I had to ride really hard. I just kind of got sick getting roosted, so I made the pass. In the second moto, I got a good start and was riding great, but Blake Baggett pressured me and I ended up losing my front end with a couple laps to go. The last two years here I’ve really struggled, but after today I’m happy.”

After losing valuable points in the first moto, Baggett’s victory in Moto 2 minimized his total points lost to seven points, giving him an 11-point lead heading into the next round.

The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship resumes on August 11 in Southwick, Massachusetts.
