AMA SUPERCROSS STANDINGS AFTER 1 OF 17 ROUNDS: NOTHING RESOLVED YET

Justin Barcia 2020 Anaheim 1 Supercross main event-6086There is no doubt that Justin Barcia was on fire at Anaheim 1. He led early, got passed by Adam Cianciarulo and came back to win. LEAVING LAS VEGAS: 2020 MONSTER ENERGY CUP MOVES TO CALIFORNIA

After year’s of touting Las Vegas on every Supercross TV show, Feld is pulling Supercross out of Vegas. The first sign that Vegas was out of the Supercross sphere was when the final round of the 2020 was moved to  Salt Lake City and Las Vegas was backed up to the penultimate round. Vegas is going to build a new stadium next year and it is unlikely that the city will be on the 2021 Supercross schedule. Then, at Anaheim 1 it was announced that the 2020 Monster Cup was being moved to Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. If you’ve never heard of Dignity Health Sports Park, join the crowd. If you’ve never heard of Carson, you will remember it when we tell you that it is famous as the home base of the Goodyear Blimp. Dignity Health Sports Park was formerly known as the Home Depot Center and then StubHub Center. As of late the Los Angeles Chargers have been playing their home games in the 27,000 seat soccer stadium, but that is over now as the Chargers move to the new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood for the 2020 NFL season.

Both Las Vegas and the state of Utah offer big dollar incentives to hold events at their facilities, so it was no surprise that at Anaheim Stadium, there were no Visit Las Vegas banners on the walls. They had been replaced by Visit Utah banners.

Dave Prater, the Director of Operations at Monster Energy Supercross, confirmed today that the 2020 Monster Energy Cup will take place in Southern California, rather than at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The move comes as no surprise – Sam Boyd Stadium will be demolished later this year. The announcement was made via the following statement in the pre-season press conference at Angel Stadium today. “The Monster Energy Cup will be moving to Southern California on October 10 2020. The event will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park, just right down the road in Carson. We are extremely excited about that. It is a new era for the Monster Energy Cup.”

See the “Man-Made Monster Face-Off ” headline on the February 2020 cover, it refers to MXA’s 500cc Two-Stroke Shootout.

We had the greatest big-bore two-stroke experts build us a modern CR500 and KX500—and put them in identical frames. Then we shot them out. While we were out it we got on hands on the all-new 2020 Husqvarna TX300 fuel-injected two-stroke and venerable Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke for detailed tests. For the four-stroke crowd, we went back to 2007 for a retro-test on Tim Ferry’s factory Kawasaki KX450. REKLUSE PARTNERS WITH THE YAMAHA FACTORY FOR 2020-21 SEASONS

Aaron Plessinger and Justin Barcia are Rekluse powered.

Rekluse is pleased to be the trusted clutch supplier for Monster Energy Factory Yamaha Racing for the upcoming 2020 and 2021 racing seasons. Justin Barcia and Aaron Plessinger will be utilizing Rekluse’s premier clutch technologies as they contest championships for Monster Energy Supercross and Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. Congratulations to Justin Barcia and the team for starting the season on a high note with a win at Anaheim 1.

Sean Brown, Rekluse President, said “We are very excited to come on board as a technical partner for Monster Energy / Yamaha Factory Racing. To have a factory 450 program recognize the value of Rekluse clutch technology is a proud moment for our company. We appreciate the trust they have in us to provide Aaron and Justin with the best clutch packages for their championship pursuits. We had the pleasure of working with Aaron Plessinger during his 250 class championships and are excited to see him back with Rekluse. Working with Justin Barcia this off-season has been extremely positive for us, and the win at A1 was a lot of fun to watch. The feedback we get from riders of their caliber is a valuable tool for us to continually improve our products.”

Yamaha Racing Department Manager, Jim Roach, said “Monster Energy/Yamaha Factory Racing is very excited to begin our partnership with Rekluse. Rekluse is a pioneer in clutch design, development, and performance. Together, we are looking forward to a successful partnership.”

HUNTER LAWRENCE HEADS TO THE 250 EAST…EVENTUALLY

Hunter Lawrence_Fox Raceway Pro Practice 6-10-19_-2Hunter Lawrence practicing before his shoulder injury.

Australian Hunter Lawrence has made a smooth transition to American motocross since moving here last year. In August he torn his ACL and had knee surgery. Then in December he injured his shoulder. The shoulder injury was bad enough that the Geico Honda team is unsure if Hunter will be able to make the first race of the late starting AMA 250 East Supercross Championship in Tampa on February.

Hunter Lawrence said, “The plan was to be ready for East Coast in mid February at Tampa, but I had a minor setback and hurt my shoulder. Rehab is in full swing. I am doing all I can to be fit and ready to fight for the 250 East Championship. Huge thank you to my team and everyone who is supporting us. Those who know me will understand this isn’t a setback, just another hurdle in life.”

Hunter Lawrence still still waiting to make his AMA Supercross debut, but his younger brother, Jett, finished 9th in his first 250 West outing at Anaheim Stadium.

CLASSIC MXA COVERS: THE SUGAR BEAR LEADS

That is Kawasaki-mounted Billy “Sugar Bear” Grossi winning the 250 Support class at the 1973 Round Atlanta Trans-AMA on the February 1974 cover of MXA. Five months later, Billy’s brother Bob Grossi would make the July 1974 cover. Adolf Weril won the 500 class at Road Atlanta ahead of Roger DeCoster, Hakan Andersson, Willi Bauer, Gerritt Wolsink and Roger DeCoster. Mike Hartwig was the first American in sixth place.

STI TIRES & WHEELS NOW DISTRIBUTED BY PARTS UNLIMITED

STI has announced a new distribution partnership with Parts Unlimited, the largest distributor of powersports products in the world. Beginning immediately, Parts Unlimited dealers will be able to provide their customers with STI’s high-quality mix of motocross, off-road, UTV and ATV tires and wheels.

STI’s Craig Petersen said, “Parts Unlimited has been the powersports industry’s distribution leader for many years. Their logistics and order-fill capabilities are the best in the business. STI’s dynamic growth required that we find a distribution solution that could meet our potential as we continue to deliver innovative products that bring value for powersports dealers. We’re excited about the opportunity to partner with Parts Unlimited and its high-performance dealer network.”STI’s Craig Peterson (714) testing the Tech 2 Pro tires the best way—by racing with them.

For motocross racers, this means that STI’s new Tech 2 Pro high-performance intermediate MX tires will find a wider audience. STI’s tire engineers and professional racers teamed up to produce pro-level tires that combine holeshot-grabbing traction with race-winning durability. The new Tech 2 Pro tires use a varied-pitch tread in a pattern with fewer center knobs and a concentrated shoulder formation to maximize performance in both loose and packed terrain conditions. Engineers strategically tuned the Pro’s lightweight carcass for the optimum balance of stiffness and flex. This maximizes the contact patch for best traction, and preserves bump-absorption characteristics, keeping the tires planted for performance.

The newly developed compound helps the tire hook up on hard-terrain MX conditions, and lets the tire excel in harsh offroad conditions. The Tech 2 Pro features a four-ply carcass tuned for best balance of stiffness (traction) and flex (bump absorption). It has an intermediate compound that also excels in hard-pack and harsh conditions. The tread pattern has varied itch knobs and a concentrated shoulder tread for max performance in loose dirt.

These new Tech 2 Pro tires provide durability that will be appreciated by top racers at a price that trail riders will admire. STI makes the Tech 2 Pro in two 18-inch sizes (110 and 1209 widths), and three 19-inch sizes (100, 110 and 120 widths). The front ire is a 80/100-21.Suggested retail pricing ranges from $57.00 to $84.00 depending on sizes. For more info on the STI Tech 2 Pro tires click here.

BIKES YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE: 1952 BSA/JAP 5000

JAP stand for J.A. Prestwich—the man who made some of the most powerful engines of the 20th century.

In 1902 J.A. Prestwich started manufacturing motorcycle engines. JAP engines were associated with racing and record success and were still used in speedway bikes well into the 1960s. In 1957 Villiers bought up the majority of J.A. Prestwich Industries stock and liquidated the company in 1964. The bike above was built by a Swedish motocross racer and is a hybrid of a BSA Gold Star chassis and a JAP engine (from a crashed midget race car). It is a one-off machine that was sold at the 2019 Mecum Auction for a $12,100 hammer price, which would include buyers fee (10%) and taxes.
