MXA PRODUCT TEST: LSP T2 MX LAP TIMER

WHAT IS IT? The LSP timer is the easiest way to record your lap times, short of having your mama come to the track.

WHAT’S IT COST? $159.00—(877) 219-3585 or www.lsptimer.com

WHAT’S IT DO? In a perfect world, everyone would have their buddy at the side of the track with a stopwatch and a pit board making sure that they didn’t slough off halfway through their practice moto. Unfortunately, this isn’t a perfect world, and we don’t know a single person who would forego riding himself to take lap times for his buddy.

This is where the LSP T2 MX Lap Timer comes into play. It’s not the first do-it-yourself lap timer we’ve seen, but it is the slickest. Designed with a little assistance from Ricky Johnson, the LSP timer not only keeps track of your lap times with a push of a button, it tells you if you are faster than your last lap, within a second of your last lap or a

second slower than your last lap.

WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the LSP T2 MX Lap Timer.

(1) Function. The LSP T2 MX Lap Timer can do it all. It can record up to 30 laps. It can record up to 64 motos for future playback. The hard part? You have to remember to press the button on each lap in the exact same spot.

(2) Lights. Lap times are meaningless while you’re riding unless you have some way of finding out if you are going fast or slow. The LSP T2 MX Lap Timer does exactly that with lights. A green light means you’re faster than your last lap. A green and red light means you’re within a second of your lap. A red light means you are over a second slower than your last lap. Catching a glimpse of the lights isn’t easy, so we suggest hitting the button in a really slow corner or over a jump where you have a second to look down at the handlebars.

(3) Mounting. The LSP T2 MX Lap Timer was designed to mount on oversized bars that don’t have a crossbar. We say this because the LSP T2 MX Lap Timer’s rectangular shape makes it perfect for oversize crossbar pads. You can mount it to regular handlebars, but you’ll have a little problem with the crossbar pad rotating.

(4) Ease of use. Spend a little bit of quality time with the LSP T2 MX Lap Timer before you hit the track. Knowing how all the functions work before you get to the track will ease some of the initial high-tech frustrations.

(5) Place of Manufacture. The LSP T2 MX Lap Timer is made in the USA.

WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? Our only quibble is that if you forget to hit the button, it throws everything out of whack. A wireless system that records the lap times without having to press a button would be nice (and expensive).
