MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE 1995 ULTRA-GENIUSES OF YAMAHA

Can you name the three “Ultra-Geniuses of Yamaha” depicted in Yamaha’s 1995, 12-page, comic book-style, YZ ad.

ULTRA-GENIUSES ANSWER: (From left to right) Keith McCarty, Ed Scheidler and Don Dudek. At the end of the comic book was the “YZ Warrior Oath.” It read, “On my honor, I do hereby swear to be a guardian and upholder of smart engineering, the Yamaha Way, and all else that is good and right in the world! I promise to be loyal, steadfast and true, and to always be sympathetic and respectful of the sick and elderly — especially those who finish behind me.”

• LUC DE LEY’S MARCEL ROADSTER NAMED ONE OF THE “10 BEST CARS AT THE QUAIL MOTORSPORT GATHERING”

MXA is proud of test rider Luc De Ley for making the Robb Report’s “10 Most Exciting Cars” from the 20th Annual Quail Lodge Concours.

Motocross racer Lus De Ley built every part of his circa 1959 De Ley Roadster by hand. He not only designed and welded the chromoly chassis, but hand-pounded the aluminum bodywork (which was left in its natural state so that every seam and weld would be visible — albeit faintly).

The fuel-injected Chevrolet LS3 V-8, was retooled to look like a carbureted 1950’s engine and is mated to a Tremec six-speed transmission with Halibrand magnesium wheels to complete the period picture.

The yearly Robb Report on the “10 Most Exciting Cars at the Quail Concours in Carmel, California” picked this unique roadster,  designed and hand-built by Luc De Ley as a tribute to his father, legendary coachwork master Marcel De Ley of Marcel’s Custom Metal in Norco, Calif. Marcel, who passed away in 2018 at age 89, was a master metal-shaper with a passion for French coach builders like Figoni et Falaschi.

Luc was a Saddleback Specialist in the 1980s with his Belgian father by his side and still races today at the weekly “Saturday at the Glen” races in the Over-60 Expert class.

The Marcel Roadster is a pure form that reveals the beauty inherent in an unfinished aluminum body, whose precise welds are a testament to the fabrication process and consummate skill of its maker.

Luc De Ley didn’t just design the body, he also built the interior, dashboard, steering wheel, console, footwells, air scoops, fuel tank and the sturdy chromoly frame.

The shape recalls Ferrari Testa Rossas, Aston Martins, Scarabs, Maseratis and Jaguars of the 1950s. The deep-red chromoly tube chassis makes a striking contrast with the natural aluminum bodywork. It is powered by a modern fuel-injected Chevrolet LS3 V-8 engine that Luc built custom velocity stacks to insure that it looked like an engine from that era.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: NITROMOUSSE FOAM TUBES

NITROMOUSSE FOAM TUBES
: Nitromousse is a high-tech foam tube made from proprietary elastomers that have millions of nitrogen charged micro-cells. This means that you can cut, puncture, tear, and hammer a NItromousse and it will continue to perform, giving you the confidence to finish the race or make it back out of the trail without concern. Nitromousses also come in two different psi feels, The 10-12 psi Platinum (designed for all-around riding and racing) and the 6-8 psi Plushie (designed for lower speed technical riding, endurocross and hard enduro riding. The retail price is $134.95 (Platinum or Plushie) at www.rockymountainatvmc.com.

NITROWEDGE:
Nitrowedge is a short section of mousse that allows you to increase the psi feel or extend the life of one with many hours on it. It allows you to increase the psi feel of any Nitromousse foam tube by adding foam volume to the current mousse, giving you the ability to “tune” the psi feel. You can also use it to increase the psi feel of a foam mousse that has a lot of hours on it and make it last even longer. The retail price is $21.95 (Platinum or Plushie) at www.rockymountainatvmc.com.

NITRO LUBE COOLING GELL: Nitrolube is a high-quality silicone based lubricant made specifically for Nitromousse foam tubes. It substantially reduces friction, disperses heat and ensures a long life of your Nitromousse. This is critical in getting the longest life out of a Nitromousse. No other lubricant works better to ensure the life of your Nitromousse. Only one tube of Nitrolube is needed to install a Nitromousse foam tube and you do not need to re-lube as long as any extra valve stem holes in your rim are covered. The retail price is $4.95 (Platinum or Plushie) at www.rockymountainatvmc.com.

• EVERY WORLD VETERAN MOTOCROSS CHAMPION (1985-2022)

When the World Vet Motocross Championship was founded by Tom White, Jody Weisel and Alan Olson in 1985, the only two age groups were Over-30 and Over-40, (Over-50 was added in 1988, Over-60 in 1994, Over-70 in 2001 and Over-80 in 2019).  It was unimaginable back in 1985 that the World Vet would grow to 1000 riders over a three-day race and have classes for Over-30, Over-40, Over-50, Over-60, Over-70 and Over-80 year old riders (with 5-year increments at 35, 45, 55 and 65).
