DREAM JOBS: JAN DOEKSEN 2 TALL RACING MANAGER
DSCN0330

STARTING POINT: “My father was a rider himself and loved anything with two wheels and an engine. So as a kid I was always surrounded by bikes and spending countless hours in the work shop with dad working on dirt bikes. I started racing motocross myself from eight years of age when the family moved to New Zealand. The Moto bug hit me ever since.”

THE JOB: “My job is to manage the business on a day to day basis. This consists of testing prototypes, managing advertisements, promoting the company and controlling parts inventory. My main responsibility is simply to promote the product the best I can by creating as much exposure as possible to get the concept and name into the market. It’s a two person job between my father and I. We have spent countless hours designing and testing our products before going into manufacturing.”

MXA FITNESS TIP OF THE WEEK: DON’T BE A FAD-SO
diet-meme-8

By Brandon Reina

There are so many confusing, crazy diet fads out there today. You name it I have probably heard about.  Eat only fruit, no carbs, eat like a caveman, don’t eat at all; those are just a few that come to mind. They all claim to promote weight loss, get you in the best shape of your life or something along those lines. Initially, some may provide this but in the long run they fail. Many of these diets are unrealistic, unhealthy and potentially harmful. I am going to point out a few of these diet fads and why they are just a fad.

Let’s first start with the claim that you should eat less than 1200 calories per day. This one doesn’t make sense. If you were to do nothing all day but lie on the couch, your body would burn at least 1200 calories just being alive. Wait…so if I eat less than 1200 calories I will lose weight. Right? Eating that few calories slows your metabolism down and your body will tend to store everything you consume. It’s a built in survival mechanism your body has. Your body will also start to break itself down to get the nutrients it needs.  Instead, try eating smaller meals more frequently. This will help increase your metabolism. I would also recommend finding your resting metabolic rate. Here is the math if your up for it (66 + (6.23 × weight in pounds) + (12.7 × height in inches) – (6.76 × age in years). It will help give you starting point for calorie intake per day.

Another fad that I hear often is eliminating a whole food group. For example, “oh carbs are the enemy. You can’t eat carbs.” Why would you cut out a whole macronutrient group? Your body needs that nutrient.  Carbohydrate, protein and fat all play important functions within the body. We can adjust the amounts of each nutrient within the diet depending on the training and work load applied to the body. I recommend eating from all food groups. You will much more likely get to your health and fitness goals eating all the proper nutrients.

This next one is a biggie; Diet pills. It seems that most people want an easy way out. Let me just take a pill and watch that fat melt away. It doesn’t work like that. It takes work and dedication to make a change. Supplements, diet pills, and vitamins are not regulated by the FDA. Who really knows what’s in those things? Some can be potentially dangerous and harmful. Stay away. Don’t be fooled by a sexy paid spokes model.

Are you one that falls into scheduled eating? I have to eat at certain times or else. Eat when you are hungry. Forcing yourself to eat when you are not hungry or starving yourself for another hour is uncomfortable. How long do you want to stay with a diet that makes you feel like that? The answer is not long. This brings up an important point. Hunger vs appetite. Do you know the difference? Hunger is the biological, physiological need to eat because your body needs the nutrients. Appetite is the psychological want to eat because it smells good, taste good, or looks good. We all have battles with our inner sugar demons. Be strong. Listen to your body.

The last one is juicing. Juicing everything from vegetables to fruit to anything that will fit in the grinder is not cool. It may help you eat more fruits, vegetables and get more nutrients. That’s great if you are using it that way. On the flip side, if you are only juicing fruits and veggies we are going to be missing essential nutrients. See second paragraph about cutting out food groups. People that only juice are often lacking protein. Protein is essential for muscle development and for metabolism. My recommendation is eat your fruits and veggies and mix them with other food groups. Plus, there is a psychological benefit from actually chewing your food instead of drinking it.

In reality, most people gain weight or add muscle over time, not overnight. When was the last time you heard someone get make a dramatic body change overnight (without surgery that is)? It’s going to take time to achieve your goals. We all want the fastest way to our goals. Be patient, do it healthy, and do it right. Change your lifestyle and learn how to eat correctly. Bottom line, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. For any of your health or fitness concerns contact Brandon at [email protected].

MY TAKE ON THE A2 INCIDENTS
250242_895059187195207_4257722663655737318_n

I am going to be honest. Seeing the incident between Chad Reed and Trey Canard first-hand I had an initial reaction of, “How could Reedy do that to nicest guy on the circuit?” I was pained to see Canard on the ground once again after Chad love-tapped him into the Tuff Blocks. But my anger changed rather quickly to confusion when the black flag came out for Chad Reed. How could a decision be made so fast? Did the AMA officials make an emotional call? Was I the only other person that saw all the other carnage that had happened that night? When the black flag was waved, I wished Chad would ignore the black flag and charged to his way to the front until the checkers flew.

It has now been a few days and the smoke has settled. I have tried to put my emotions aside and put myself in Chad’s shoes (from a racer’s perspective). I ask myself, “What do the fans like so much about Chad?” Perhaps it is because Chad tells it how it is. He is not a fake. He never leaves anything on the table. Good, bad or totally off-base, he has loyal fans because of the person he is on and off the track.

It is no secret Chad has been having a rough start to the 2015 season. With two 10th place finishes so far this year, Chad was desperately looking for a breakout ride. It might have been at A2. Of course, Trey Canard wanted to get a good finish at A2 also. Although his season hasn’t been as bad as Chads, he also needed a breakout night. Although completely different riders off the track, they both were focused on doing well in Anaheim. The motivation was there for both of them. And, I like Chad and Trey very much, so I’m not taking one side over the other.

With Chad getting a good start in the main his mind was set on the podium. This would have been a result that he could build on. On the other hand, Trey can see the 2015 Supercross Championship within reach. And Chad was in his way. Trey is known for getting over-zealous when piercing through the field. With all the post-race chatter about what the two riders should have done. Only Chad and Trey know why they did what they did. It is obvious, after the fact, that Trey should have been more patient, but Trey wasn’t worried about passing Chad, he knew that was going to happen. What he was worried about was how long it was going to take tp pass Chad, because the time he spent behind Chad was allowing Roczen and Dungey to get farther ahead. On Chad’s part, he knew that Trey was breathing down his neck. Trey had been running next to him and sticking wheels in all during the preceding lap. So, in defense, Chad changed his line in the fateful corner to make sure that Trey didn’t get quick pass in the most likely spot. Any smart racer would protected the inside if they almost got passed there on the lap prior. It was Chad’s perogative, since he was leading. The fault for the crash lies with Trey — hands down. Chad was blind to what was happening behind him. It was Trey’s job to interpret and react to what the rider in front of him was doing.

At 1:11 Justin Barcia takes out Seely’s front Wheel

What happened after the crash was not a pretty sight. But, it was a love-tap. It was not a T-bone and people should stop referring to it as that. To remind everyone what T-bone means, it is a full-on ram into the side of another rider’s bike. What Chad did to Trey was a love-tap — albeit with an elbow and shoulder thrown in deliberately. Chad is telling the truth when he says that he did not mean for Trey to crash into the Tuff Block. He only wanted to deliver a message that he was royalty upset. But, much like a person who accidently shoots his friend in the face, “Chad didn’t know the gun was loaded.” Trey, although not an innocent victim, was way off the racing line, with one hand off the bars, adjusting his goggles and not paying attention to Chad. Because it wasn’t a racing incident. Because Trey crashed while riding slowly on the edge of the track. Because the AMA/FIM officials were looking down from above (and got to see the incident second later on the Jumbotron), the black flag flew. That stunned everyone.

In the heat of the moment, would I have done the exact same thing? Yes. In fact, during my Pro career I probably did worse. Chad’s bad season and lingering doubts about whether he could turn his season around were being erased by the fact that he was running near the front —then, “whammo!” He reached his boiling point. He reacted out of anger because it is his career that is at stake. Let’s say, for point of conjecture, that Chad had resisted the urge to leave the racing line and give Trey that love-tap. Instead, if Chad had pulled in behind Trey and followed him for a couple corners, he could have taken him out on the racing line and claimed that it was a “racing incident.” The officials might not have been happy, but it would have been a done deal. There would have been no black flag. Chad might even have raced back into the top ten. And Trey would probably pay him back in kind in a race or two. That’s the law of the jungle. By the way….did anyone see Justin Barcia take out Cole Seely? Or Josh Hanson take out Shane McElrath? Those didn’t become big deals.

A2 BREAKOUT: COOPER WEBB
IMGL9627

The 18-year-old Cooper Webb  is the real deal. With already two wins under his belt and the number one plate is in his sights, Cooper is a star on the rise. In A2 he got a mid-pack start and never stopped charging. Once he got up to secondplace, it looked like Tyler Bowers had a commanding lead. But, Webb put his head put and reeled Bowers at a rate of  one to two seconds each lap. With half a lap left in the 250 Main, Webb closed the gap and made a very aggressive pass that forced Bowers to go off the track. It was impressive to say the least.
