THE TOM WHITE MEMORIAL PARADE LAP

BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: CZ TYPE 860 V4 350

The Type 860 was a 350cc V$ four-stroke road racer that was started in 1965, but not raced until 1969 because of limited communist funding. It was a 350 for several years and was then bumped up to 418cc in 1971. The original eight-speed transmission was dumped when the FIM banned anything with more than six-speeds. It never won a race, but finished second once. The Czech goverment ordered them destroyed after their racing days were over, but the ever enterprising Czech mechanics saved most of them.

TAKING A BREAK TOM SELLECK-STYLE

After a hectic week at the four-day long World Vet Championship, Glen Helen track worker John Allen jetted off to Hawaii for a quick vacation before the Day In The Dirt starts next week. We like his choice of beach reading material.

WHAT THE MXA WRECKING CREW IS UP TO THIS WEEK

MXA’s Dennis Stapleton, Brian Medeiros and Justin Muscutt flew to Mumbai, India, this week to race in the Indian Championships in Puna. For Stapleton it is old hat to race in foreign countries, but Brian and Justin have never been be out of the USA. Stapleton’s advice to them, “Pack you suitcases with clothes, then unpack them and fill the suitcases up with American food.”

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: MXA’S FAVORITE JEREMY McGRATH PHOTO

TRmcgrath1Back in 1990, when nobody outside of Perris Raceway knew who Jeremy McGrath was, the MXA wrecking crew knew that Jeremy was a natural talent and ask him to join the MXA wrecking crew as a test rider. This is our favorite photo of Jeremy. He is testing the 1990 Kawasaki KX250 two-stroke and wearing the famous Indian headress helmet.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: REMEMBERING AL BAKER

trbakercarlsbadFor most MXA test riders this is a flashback photo that brings memories rushing back. That’s the late Al Baker testing MXA’s 1976 Suzuki RM370 at the long-gone Carlsbad Raceway. Al, who had a column in MXA, is wearing his Checkers helmet and the official red/white/blue MXA jersey of the era. Note the seven-buckle boots and cowhide leather pants. Sadly, Al was killed in an airplane crash.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: COLE SEELY ON SKIPPY’S RM-Z

One of the benefits of being an MXA test rider, especially when you are an upcoming young Pro, is that you might be chosen to test a factory bike, Cole Seely got the call when MXA tested Chad Reed’s National Championship RM-Z450 back in 2008.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: GARY ON THE BIG KWACKER

Four-time 250 National Champion Gary Jones was a full-time MXA gang member in the 1970s and 1980s. Here, Gary tests the frame rails on a 1983 Kawasaki KX500.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: LANCE THE TRANCE

Lancewood Moorewood whips a 1986 Cagiva 125 for Ketchup Cox’s camera. This was supposedly a replica of the bike that Pekka Vehkonnen won the 1885 FIM 125 World Championship on. MXA said that at least the decals were replicas of Pekka’s bike.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: NO ONE LEANED IN LIKE LARRY

Larry Brooks on a 1993 Kawasaki KX250. Larry had an incredibly long reign at MXA and tested ever bike made from the late ’80 to the early 2000s.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: DG’s CLOTHING LINE

It seems like an eternity ago that DG made motocross gear.

A PHOTO WE NEVER THOUGHT WE’D SEE

Yep! That’s Justin Barcia standing behind hids new Monster/Knich YZ450F. Justin will be filling in for Davi Millsaps. Yamaha says that he will only be on the team for the first six Supercross rounds, but that depends how fast Davi heals from a massive concussion and broken elbow.
