FROM TODD HUFFMAN: TO OUR MOTO INDUSTRY FRIENDS

From Todd Huffman: Last week we relaunched “The John Penton Story” on www.kickstarter.com and wanted everyone to be aware of the campaign to get this film finally produced. We have lowered the amount to $150,000 from $275,000 and have increased the length of time for the campaign to the max of 60 days. Our friend and friend of motorcycling, Lyle Lovett is still committed to be the narrator for the film. If fully funded we will begin shooting in the spring of next year to have the film ready by 2014. We hope everyone can be part of the project with pledges as low as $1.00 and great rewards starting at just $10.00. And remember, no funds are collected unless the entire campaign is funded. Nothing to lose! If your company is interested in being a sponsor after the campaign is over please contact us.

You can view our new video and get more information here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/toddhuffman/the-john-penton-story-narrated-by-lyle-lovett-rela

CANADA TO ALLOW 250 TWO-STROKES IN THE 250 CLASS FOR THE 2013 NATIONALS

From CMRC: For the 2013 racing season, 250cc two-strokes will be eligible to compete in the MX2 Pro class at the Regional, Provincial and National levels. This rule will be applied on a trial basis. Bikes with the same displacement will continue to be eligible for competition in the MX1 class.

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHERE IS THE YZ150F?

2013 Honda CRF150.

Dear MXA,
Where is the YZ150F? RM-Z150? KX150F and 150SXF? Honda embraced the 150cc four-stroke class, but no one else has followed suit. Why?

Because the CRF150 was a marketing idea that did not match the economics of the minicycle class. Had the Honda CRF150 been a sales success perhaps the other brands would have followed their lead, but it wasn’t. The CRF150 was more expensive to buy, maintain and hop-up and thus it only found limited success. What the minicycle world needs isn’t a high-tech, 150cc four-stroke, but a new generation of 85cc two-strokes to replace the aging fleet of minicycles that dates back 10 to 20 years.

ASK THE MXPERTS: YZ250 KICKSTART SHAFT FAILURES

Line up the dots.

Dear MXA,
I’ve had three failures of the kickstart shaft assembly on my 2006 YZ250. The shaft portion of the original factory part broke in 2011. Since then I have experienced two more failures of the replacement OEM parts. All failures have been on cold engine starts. Please help.

A check of Yamaha warranty claims revealed that there have only been 12 incidents in the last six years. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen, but Yamaha’s engineers suggested two possible scenarios. (1) You should engage your YZ250 kickstarter in much the same way that a YZ450F rider brings his bike up through TDC. Push down on the lever and then let it return, but do not kick it downward until you feel the gear engage. Do not slap at the kickstarter. (2) When you reinstalled the new OEM kick starter shafts did you line up the dots on the gear engagement mechanism? This is important because it controls the stroke of the kick starter.
