MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE GREATEST MOTO-PHOTO ADVICE EVER

• HOW TO SHOOT GREAT MOTO PHOTOS! ACE SHOOTER DEBBI TAMIETTI JUST FOLLOWS AN AUSSIE AROUND

Australian Dan Alamangos is an abundant source of strangely odd photographs and all Debbi has to do is follow Dan around, when he is shooting photos between his races, and wait for the magic to happen.

Debbi has shot AMA Nationals, Grand Prixs and the Motocross des Nations, but she loves to shoot the local racers at the weekly “Saturday at the Glen” races. Here, she captures Dan Alamangos high fiving his buddy.

Debbi caught Dan checking out an amazingly deep rut at Glen Helen.

Everyone in motocross loved Chuck “Feets: Minert, but none as much as the REM racers. After Feets passed away, they showed up in matching shirts honoring the AM Hall of Famer and Catalina Grand Prix winner, who raced into his 80s. Dan Alamangos is #30.

Remembering a friend and a hero.

Dan Alamangos tries to discourage any would-be passers from making the move.

Val Tamietti checks out Dan’s butt patch.

Dan’s butt patch needs no explanation.

And if Debbi runs out of Dan Alamangos photos, she can always fall back on shooting photos of his mellower brother Chris (1).

• GODSPEED! PETER STARR (1942-2023)

Peter Starr was an avid motorcyclist, disc jockey, TV producer and film maker whose work includes dozens of productions about motorcycles and motorcycling—bringing the message that motorcycles are fun, exciting, practical and liberating to countless riders and non-riders.

Born in Coventry, England, on November 2, 1942, Starr started riding motorcycles at an early age and turned his love for bikes into a four-year stint working for Triumph in the early 1960s.

Peter Starr when he was a disc jockey in San Antonio, Texas.

Starr came to America as a disc jockey and got a job in San Antonio, Texas, at KONO and KTSA in the late 1960s, (coincidentally, he was friends with a young Texas racer name Jody Weisel. Their paths would cross several times over the decades). Disc jockies lead a nomadic life and Peter spent time working in Canada before moving to Los Angeles, where he pursued a successful career as a record producer, writer and film maker. His most famous motorcycle movies were “Take it to the Limit” which covered the lives of famous motorcycle racers in the 1970s and “Bad Rock” a film about the Bad Rock International Six Day Trial (ISDT) qualifier in Oregon. It was financed by Hodaka motorcycles. Peter was inducted into the Trailblazers Hall of Fame in 2011 and into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2017.

Peter Starr lost his long battle with prostate cancer on July 3, 2023.

• COOPER WEBB & KTM PART WAYS: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY!

Cooper Webb 2023 Thunder Valley National-0142Here is the press release from KTM about Cooper Webb leaving the team. They say nice things, and with good reason, they had a lot of success together, but the last two years have been testy:

KTM presses release: Red Bull KTM Factory Racing would like to thank Cooper Webb for his achievements, commitment and determination following a highly-successful five seasons together. At this time, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and the 27-year-old Webb have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.

Ian Harrison with MXA’s Josh Mosiman.

Ian Harrison, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager: “On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Cooper for the years of successes we have had together. Over the past five years, we have been on the 450SX podium 52 times and of those, 21 were victories. We won the 450SX titles in 2019 and 2021, had a strong runner-up season in 2020 and finished third this year despite an unfortunate season-ending crash in Nashville.

“Cooper had the option in his contract as to whether he wanted to race outdoors and he decided at Daytona that he would not compete in AMA Pro Motocross in 2023. However, following his SX season-ending crash in Nashville, Cooper reached out about racing MX and KTM agreed to support him for the summer. Both sides came into the series somewhat underprepared and a practice crash before Red Bud sidelined Cooper once again.

“Both Cooper and the team have decided to part ways, this will give him time to recover and then move on to the next chapter of his racing career. The team and myself wish him all the best. I will always be reminded of the success we have had together because Cooper’s championship bikes and trophies stand proudly in the KTM race shop lobby.”

Webb joined Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in 2019 and went on to clinch a first-career 450SX Championship in that inaugural campaign, before again claiming the premier class crown in 2021 onboard the KTM 450 SXF Factory Edition.

Collectively, between 2019-2023, Webb and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing amassed a total of 21 Main Event wins together in the 450SX division of the AMA Supercross Championship, as well as a single AMA Pro Motocross Championship 450MX round victory in 2019. The entire team wishes Cooper well in his future endeavors.

The three USA riders were Rick Burgett, Danny Turner and Bob Hannah. Additionally, the MXA wrecking crew headed to Japan for the Kamisu City Beach Race (with a side trip to the Honda Museum). • MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: RED LINE SYNTHETIC OIL’S TOP THREE PRODUCTS

RED LINE OIL SUPERCOOL COOLANT
“Red Line Oil Supercool is a great option for all riders. It is pre-diluted, ready to use and enhances operating performance. At just $25.15 per 1/2 gallon, Supercool reduces engine temperatures by up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit in all makes and models. Not only does Supercool have scientifically enhanced cooling properties, it offers superior protection against cavitation, corrosion and erosion.”

RED LINE TWO-STROKE RACE OIL

“Our two-stroke race oils are scientifically formulated, 100-percent synthetic oil configured to run dramatically cleaner than any other brand on the market. Plus, they’re approved for TPI bikes. At $13.99 for a 16-ounce bottle, our two-stroke oil is designed to keep your bike’s power valve working strong and to keep the carbon on the piston to a minimum. In fact, in recent testing of several two-stroke oils, Red Line Oil had the highest torque and matched the top horsepower, all while burning cleaner than any other tested oils. The lab called it “the cleanest they had ever tested.”

RED LINE 10W40 ENGINE OIL

“Our line-up of powersports oils are scientifically created and are 100-percent synthetic with no mineral oil mixed in (as with several other “full synthetics”). Plus, they’re engineered with high 2260-ppm zinc. In a recent dyno test comparing top-tier oils on a 2022 KTM 450SXF, we found that Red Line made up to 2.5 percent more power, and ran up to 15-percent cooler. Red Line Oil produces top-level horsepower, protects the engine and runs dramatically cooler for long-duration power. At $18.95 a quart, Red Line Oil is used and proven by riders like Kevin Moranz and teams like MotoConcepts Honda.” For more information got to www.redlineoil.com or call (800) 624-7958.
