250 SMX CHICAGOLAND HIGHLIGHTS

In the 250 class second moto, Jo Shimoda was the fastest rider as he reeled in Hunter Lawrence for what would have been a $50,000 payday with a 2-1 win over Lawrence’s 1-2 finish, but instead, Jo Shimoda came up short on a jump and even though he handled the landing fine, he felt that something waswrong and slowed down—allowing Hunter Lawrence to pass him and pull away. But Shimoda decided that nothing was wrong and got back up to speed…too late to stop Lawrence from winning the night. That feeling cost Jo $25,000 (the difference between winning or getting second).

450 SMX CHICAGOLAND HIGHLIGHTS

The 450 second moto had an even weirder finish than the 250 class. As Ken Roczen began to pressure Jett Lawrence near the end of the second moto, Jett slowed and waved Ken by with his right hand. Ken passed Jett and went on to win the second moto to finished second overall with a 3-1. On the podium Jett said that he did the math in his head late in the second moto and realized that his 1-2 would still win the Chicagoland overall and the $100,000 purse and, then he added, that he gave Roczen the moto win to make sure that Roczen’s 3-1 would beat Chase Sexton’s 2-3 since Sexton was his closest competitor. The only problem was that even if Jett had gone on to win the second moto and Roczen had finished with a 3-2 (instead of a 3-1), Roczen would still have beaten Chase Sexton’s 2-3 by virtue of Ken’s better second moto. The fans were thrilled that Kenny took the moto win, but had to feel that Jett’s misguided “freebie” to Kenny ruined what might have been an incredible battle to the line. They, like everyone watching in the pits or on television had to wonder what would have happened if they raced to the line.
