Kidney belts actually do help support your core and offer added protection, but they fell out of favor with riders. However, before they became passe’ AXO reinvented the kidney belt by adding plastic to the formula.

This a R.J. Wageman. It was the first time R.J. made a Supercross main event. He was so excited. We originally thought it was his brother Robbie, but Robbie had two first turn crashes and even though he rode well he didn’t make the main.

WHO IS OUTSIDE THE TOP TEN LOOKING IN?
Justin Brayton hurt his thumb and didn’t score any points in San Diego. He dropped out of the top ten and back to 12th.
Justin Bogle has been behind the eight-ball all year long. He runs up front, but then drops back. However, his 4th in San Diego was earned with dogged determination. Justin has been moving up in the points standings every race. He has gone 19, 15, 17, 10 and 4. He is now in 13th.
Jason Anderson’s season ended after Anaheim 2 when he broke his arm practicing. However, he is still the 2018 AMA Supercross Champion until the last round and is currently 14th in points (even though he missed the last two races).
It didn’t help when Joey Savatgy’s works KX450 quit mysteriously in Oakland. Joey has been in the top ten twice, but missed out in San Diego and got a 21st in Oakland. He is 15th in points.
Justin Hill missed San Diego with an injury, which didn’t help, but neither did his 15, 13, 11, 14 scores over the first four rounds. He has the speed, now he needs to control it.
Tyler Bowers has only made the top ten once (San Diego). His other scores are 21, 16 and 12. He is 17th in 450 points.
AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: WHY WASTE TIME? JUST HAVE A SINGLE AMA 250 SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Under the current AMA “pointing out” rules (we say “current” because this rule has changed continously since 1986), a rider can stay in the regional Supercross series until he earns the maximum points threshold four times (that threshold is currently 135 points). Prior to 2018, it was set at three years. Additionally, the rule that stated that a rider who won the 250 East/West Supercross series twice had to move out of the class was changed in 2018 to allows riders, who wins the East/West twice, to stay for a maximum of three years (a year is defined as 5 points in a year).
In any rational world, the AMA would institute a single AMA 250 Supercross Champion and forget about making anyone point out. Face it, they pay the 250 East/West riders a pittance and the bonuses are much less than in the 450 class because of the regional definition of the series. A 250 rider who finishes outside of the top ten in the 250 East/West main event, earns less money than a 450 rider who finishes dead last in the 450 Last Chance ($1000).
BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: IT’S NOT A MOTOCROSS BIKE, BUT ITS’ GOT BSA PARTS
This is Jody’s Weisel’s personal 1953 Sunbeam S7—with its original condition mist green paint. This motorcycle belonged to Jody’s father before him and has been in the family for 66 years. Click on images to enlarge.
Although once a stand-alone motorcycle manufacturer, Sunbeam was bought by BSA in 1943 — evidenced by the fact that the S7’s forks are BSA units — gussied up.
The shaft-drive rear hub used a worm-gear drive and was attached to the plunger rear shocks.
We found this interesting because last weekend at the Mecum Motorcycle Auction in Las Vegas, a British-built 1951 Sunbeam S7 sold for $16,500. The Sunbeam S7 was quite unique in its day. It had an unusual longitudinally-mounted, horizontally split, overhead cam, 487cc, inline twin engine based on an experimental 1932 BSA design. It had a coil ignition, wet sump lubrication, dry clutch and shaft drive to the rear wheel. Rear suspension was handled by plunger shocks mounted to the rear hub. Sunbeam S7’s were among the most expensive bikes you could buy in 1953 and it was over-engineered for the time. In it’s 66 years Jody’s Sunbeam has racked up only 1300 miles. That’s 19 miles a year.
