MXA’S WEEKEND NEW ROUND-UP: THE FOCUS IS ON THE GLEN

They can wave to each other as they pass by. The downhill on the left is Yamaha Hill, while the uphill on the right is called “The Finger.”

This road crossing on the way up Mt. Saint Helen is big and harks back to the days of Saddleback’s Suicide Mountain. This bares no resemblance to any of the previous 17 races of 2014.

For the AMA pro riders, getting ready for the opening AMA National of the year has gone smoothly. Glen Helen has been evolving the National track design with new reveals and lots of test days for the Pro riders. Most of the SoCal based teams have had their riders at Glen Helen on every Thursday for the past three weeks and even gotten special test days where only AMA Pro riders were allowed to try out the layout. Obviously this is good for the Pro racers, but it is also good for the Glen Helen track. Jody Weisel has been at every test session and, immediately after it is over, has redesigned angles, approaches and jump faces to improve the track. The Glen Helen track crew, led by Karl Scanlon, has been busy keeping up with the changes. In fact, they have rebuilt the Pyramid jump (before the wall-like Velodrome corner, four times—each time they make it bigger, the riders jump farther—thus it keeps growing.

How much sand is too much? Christophe Pourcel thinks that this is about the right amount.

But the test time is running down. Most teams have finalized their suspension and engine packages and are just showing up to give their riders saddle time—and at Glen Helen that is very important. The big hills, rough straights and high speed sections are quite a bit different that the Supercross fare they have lived for the previous 17 races. The race that SoCal fans waited four years for—is now only a week away.

JEFF NORTHRUP ENGAGES THE LATERAL ARABESQUE

jeffnorthrup
Jeff Northrup.

Hello everyone,

I want to let you know that Friday, May 16, will be my last day at FMF. It’s been a great experience. I have learned so much working on the other side of the fence since I ended my racing career. I’m extremely thankful that FMF believed in me and gave me the opportunity to work for such an amazing brand that stays so involved in the motocross industry that I love so much. I will be closing this chapter in my life and opening up a new Chapter with Western Power Sports as a northern California Dealer Rep. This is a great opportunity for me to be back close to my family and relatives as well as staying in the motocross industry while raising a new family of my own.

My passion for ridding dirt bikes will never change so I’m sure we will run into each other again soon. Keep roosting!

Jeff Northrop
