ONE LONG LAST GOODBYE TO OUR BUDDY TOM WHITE

After Tom White passed away just before the 2017 Dubya USA World Veteran Motocross Championship the MXA wecking crew stopped by his “Early Years of Motocross Museum” for one last goodbye. It was emotional for us because not only was Tom a major player in the sport, but he was an important part of MXA. We weren’t ready for the impact of seeing Tom’s orange MXA helmet on display.

BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: EAST GERMAN MZ 175

MZ was a ground breaking motorcycle company in the 1960s thanks to the two-stroke genius of Walter Kaaden. Kaaden was the father of the expansion chamber and many other two-stroke engine innovations. But the East German company didn’t have the financial might to break into the American market. This MZ, which stands for Motorradwerk Zschopau, was modified with a Greeves leading link fork and front wheel.

MXA test rider Willy Musgrave obliterates a berm on a 1994 Kawasaki KX500. Willy was one of MXA’s most trusted test riders. Along with Pete Maly, Lance Moorewood, Larry Brooks and Dennis Stapleton these four test riders bridged the gap from the first issue to the most recent one. MXA AD OF THE WEEK: ATK 406

When every other motorcycle brand went to water-cooling ATK’s Horst Leitner knew that there was a big market for air-cooled dirt bikes. His ATK 406 two-stroke was powered by a Rotax engine and featured a countershaft rear disc, backwards brake pedal, WP suspension, anti-chain torque drive line and amazing simplicity.
