• GLEN HELEN AMA NATIONAL TWO-STROKE CHALLENGE: HOW TO GET IN

When the gate drops you can expect Sean Collier (207) to have his Kawasaki KX500 out front at both the World Two-Stroke Championship and the Glen Helen AMA National Two-Stroke Challenge.

Good news for smoker fans! There will be a two-stroke class at the 2017 AMA 250/450 National at Glen Helen on May 27, 2017. This is a great opportunity, not only for the fans to see and hear the sounds of two-strokes, but for Pro riders, both young and old, to race on a full-blown AMA National track on the same day as Dungey, Musquin, Seely, Anderson, Osborne, Baggett, Webb and Tomac. How does a rider qualify to be invited into the National two-stroke field? That’s simple. A little more than a month before the Glen Helen National, the 2017 MTA World Two-Stroke Championship will be held at Glen Helen on Saturday, April 15 (with an $8000 purse). The top 20 Pro riders from the World Two-Stroke Championship will automatically be seeded into the Glen Helen National Two-Stroke Challenge field. Glen Helen will invite “wild card” riders to fill any spots that are vacated by Pro riders who are entered into the AMA 250 or 450 National classes (and thus can’t take their spot in the two-stroke race). • JOE GIBBS LUCK? MATT BISCELGIA OUT AGAIN … NEVER ACTUALLY IN

The MXA wrecking crew has been hanging out at the Joe Gibbs race shop this week and things look bad for the new Suzuki team for the rest of the AMA Supercross season. Matt Bisceglia, who signed to race the 250 West for JGRMX Suzuki, broke his foot one month before the 250 West started and planned to switch to the 250 East. Now, he broken his tib and fib and will probably sit out the majority of the 2017 season — Supercross and Nationals.

The Joe Gibbs team hasn’t had much luck. Justin Barcia hurt his wrist before the opening round and missed the first 6 races. Bam Bam’s ring rust is showing — in his two races back (Minneapolis and Atlanta) he has yet to crack the top 15.

Weston Peick was a solid performer (three top tens) until he broke his wrist at round four and is now sidelined until the AMA Nationals. Additionally, teammate Phil Nicoletti raced the first six 250 West races and was preparing to switch to the 450 class when he broke his heel.

Jake Weimer has been filling in the 450 class, along with Kyle Peters in the 250 East, but Weimer is riding with a bad back and Peters is contracted to race the Australian National Championships — which start on April 2. Kyle Peters is only scheduled to ride for JGR through this weekend’s Toronto round before heading Down Under, but they are trying to work it out so he can stay for a couple more races (but Peter’s Wilson Coolair Motul Suzuki team says that Toronto will be Kyle’s last Supercross…and that he will be on a flight to Australia soon after the Canadian Supercross).

• THIEVES STEAL 10 KTM SUPERCROSS CHALLENGE PEE WEES IN ATLANTA

Some towns are worse than others, but for Supercross racers the sooner they get out of Atlanta the better. Atlanta has been the crime capital of Supercross for several years now—every year riders have their bikes stolen. Thankfully, for riders who live in mortal fear of having their bikes stolen from the parking lots of their hotels, this is the last Atlanta Supercross in the Georgia Dome. But, the last one wasn’t soon enough for the KTM Pee-Wee Supercross Challenge team. They had 10 totally tricked-out KTM 50SX bikes stolen from their transporter while in Atlanta last week. Will KTM want to return to Atlanta for it Pee-Wee program in the the future? Luckily, with the help of their dealer network, KTM was able to scrape the necessary number of bikes together to go to this weekend’s Toronto Supercross.

• AMA SUPERMOTO ISN’T DEAD YET, BUT NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING

You don’t need Kreskin to tell you that Supermoto died in the USA several years ago. It didn’t have a base of amateur riders to build on and apart from its founding as the “Superbikers” TV show on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” yearly broadcast back in the 1980s, it has been a hodge-podge affair that has never found success. For 2017, DRT Racing will be running the AMA Supermoto series with five-race schedule that is so spread out geographically (and takes place over a 7-month time frame) that it couldn’t possible generate any fan enthusiasm for the series, although the stand-alone events may garner local interest.

• THE RACE TO SURPASS STEFAN’S 100 GP WINS

After last year, when Tony Cairoli seemed to lose his pizazz at 77 Grand Prix wins, Stefan Everts’ record of 100 Grand Prix wins seemed out of reach from the Italian. Now, Cairoli is fit and ready to go. His double moto victory in Qatar last Saturday night was his 78th GP victory (24 in the 250 GPs and 54 in the 450 class). The most wins Tony has ever had in a single season was 11 GP victories in 2012. Given that he is currently 22 wins short of Everts Grand Prix win record, and the number of GPs held in 2017,  Cairoli could catch Everts sometimes by the end of the 2018 season. Assuming that he can match his best single season performance twice.

• DO YOU KNOW THE TOP AMERICAN GRAND PRIX WINNERS?

The late Donny Schmit is the winningest American rider in Grand Prix history.

Americans fans have notoriously shown very little interest in the FIM World Championships. Their interest is only piqued when a famous American rider goes to Europe. As for the regular cast of Italians, Belgians, French and German GP riders, Americans fans deliver a collective yawn. But, some great Americans have raced the GPs with serious intent, as evidenced by American World Champions Brad Lackey (1982), Danny LaPorte (1982), Trampas Parker (1989-1991), Donny Schmit (1990-1992) and Bobby Moore (1994). But typically, former American stars go to Europe at the end of their careers (as a paid vacation) or at the beginning of their careers when no factory team in the USA wants them (like current GP riders Thomas Covington and Darian Sanayei). Still, a surprising number of Americans have won GPs — 37 to be exact. And, while a large number of those wins came at USGPs in Unadilla, Budds Creek, Glen Helen, Mid-Ohio, Hollister and Carlsbad, the overall number is still impressive. Here is the list.

• SUZUKI FACTORY MXGP RIDER NOT ALLOWED INTO QATAR FOR GP

Stefan Everts has gambled on young Lithuanian Arminas Jasikonis.to revitalize his Suzuki MXGP team, but missing Qatar didn’t help.

Suzuki World MXGP rider Arminas Jasikonis missed the 2017 FIM World Motocross season opener this past weekend in Qatar because Qatar does not issue visas to riders from former Eastern Bloc countries. Jasikonis is from Lithuania. Jasinkonis flew into Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday, where he was told that he could be issued a visa in customs. Unfortunately for Jasikonis that on-site visa program is only offered to residents of 30 countries (USA, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Spain, Monaco, Vatican, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and South Korea). Not Lithuania!

Suzuki MXGP team owner Stefan Everts went to the airport to see if he could facilitate getting Jasikonis into Qatar. Stefan said, “They put Arminas back on a plane to Europe because he didn’t have the right visa. It’s a very bad break for him after having a good pre-season. We were really looking forward to having him on the start line on the new RM-Z450WS. It is a big disappointment for the whole team and Suzuki to not see him here after all the work we’ve put in. This is how it is and we have to accept it, we should have taken care better on the visa issue and we will learn from this. I want to apologise to all our sponsors, partners and fans, and especially to Suzuki.”

• WHERE WILL GIUSEPPE LUONGO FIND AN AMERICAN USGP TRACK?

When Youthstream reneged on giving Glen Helen the Motocross des Nations for the second time (after announcing both dates as official) and then couldn’t come to terms with Charlotte Motor Speedway, Youthstream lost its two best chances to hold Grand Prix races in America. In the past, Luongo could fall back on Jonathan Beasley at Budds Creek to come up with the money to hold a GP or MXDN, but Beasley isn’t in a position to do so anymore. And, since they wouldn’t negotiate a better deal for Charlotte, that means they are holding fast on getting their exorbitant sanction fee up front. Charlotte was willing to do the race—they just wanted to pay less (based on return on investment numbers). So, if they weren’t willing to take less money from Charlotte, then why would they take less money from a new track. And, most American track owners would choke on the contract stipulations in doing a USGP deal with Luongo.

Luongo claimed last week that he would announce a new USGP track this week. We doubt he can do a deal that fast—unless he tries to go back to Glen Helen or reopen contract talks with Charlotte. Theoretically, he should put the new USGP date one week before or one week after the April 2nd Mexican GP to keep travel costs down for the MXGP teams. If he sticks with the existing September 3rd Charlotte date, then he is putting a big burden on the MXGP teams to travel to the USA for one event and then have to be back in Holland seven days later. However, any April date would not leave enough time to prepare for or promote the USGP. Thus, September 3rd is as set in stone as any date on the ever-flexible Youthstream calendar.

Euro rumors suggest that this year’s Charlotte USGP will be held in Spain, just as Glen Helen’s 2017 MXDN will be held in England. Meanwhile it appears that Qatar is done with MXGP. Their contract expired right after Saturday nights race, and doesn’t look like it will be renewed. No problem for Luongo, there are plenty of flat desolate field all over the Middle East and Giuseppe can easily find another one. Reportedly he is talking to Kuwait (who expressed interest last year). Even Iran is on Youthstream’s radar (although they are currently refusing to allow American athletes into Iran for international competitions — shades of Arminas Jasikonis only for Covington and Sanayei. Meanwhile, the June 25 Italian GP at Maggiora is in doubt because they reportedly violated Italian environment laws by expanding into protected green space. The matter must be resolved quickly or the race will have to be moved to a different Italian track

• DUNGEY RACING BY HIMSELF IN TORONTO…IT’S TRUE

When the AMA (which we thought stood for American Motorcyclist Association) Supercross series gets to Canada on Saturday night, Ryan Dungey (1) will be the only rider racing on the ninth round of the series, everybody else is on round 8 or even round 3. Sometimes it’s better to be tactician than an attacker.

As the AMA 450 Supercross season reaches its “past halfway” point this weekend in Toronto, it is a good time to see where riders stand with 8 races done and 9 to go. First, 34 riders have earned points in the 450 class —up one from last week because Scott Champion came over from the 250 West to qualify for the 450 class. With 25 points up for grabs at each race, there are 225 points left for any rider who can sweep the boards over the next 9 races. However, for every 25-point increment that a rider falls behind the points leader, he becomes one full race out of the lead.Here are the riders who are one, two, three, four and five races behind the points leader.

Marvin Musquin is the only rider not in a big hole yet, but he’s teetering on the edge.

ON THE SAME RACE ON THE SAME RACE

When the 450 riders line up for the main event in Toronto only Ryan Dungey can take a deep breath because no matter what happens in Canada, he will still be in the points lead (although he could be tied with teammate Marvin Musquin who is exactly 25 points behind Ryan).

ONE RACE BEHIND (MORE THAN 25 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)

Eli Tomac finished second last Saturday night in Atlanta, but the 3 points he lost to Ryan Dungey pushed him to 27 point behind the points leader — which means that Eli is one race (and 2 points) out of the lead. Cole Seely was 26 points behind Dungey heading into Atlanta, but left it 36 points back. That is one race plus 11 points — thus, even if Dungey failed to qualify in Toronto and Seely won, Cole would still be 11 points behind Ryan. And that’s it for riders who are close enough to Dungey to get a sniff of the title. Dungey, Musquin, Tomac and Seely have shaken out as the title contenders.

Jason Anderson is in no man’s land. He is the only rider two races back from Dungey—everyone else is much farther back, save for Musquin, Tomac and Seely.

TWO RACES BEHIND (MORE THAN 50 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)

Jason Anderson is 53 points out of the lead. That is two full races, plus 3 points. Jason was disqualified from a race or he would be one race plus a bunch of points back. Instead, he is now two full races and a handful of point out of the the lead, but he is lucky — because he stands alone at two races behind Dungey. Every other rider is at least three races back. Here is a quick rundown.

If you aren’t well-versed in motocross history then this photo will surprise you. First, it proves that motocross gear has gone through ugly stages before. In fact, this photo was shot in 1990. Second, do you recognize the rider? It’s Johnny O’Mara on a Kawasaki with Jeff Stanton to his left and Damon Bradshaw over his shoulder. Johnny raced for Team Kawasaki in 1990 after spending time at Mugen, Honda and Suzuki. In 30 races on the green machine Johnny was in the top ten 24 times, finishing 3rd in the AMA 500 Nationals, 5th in the 250 Nationals and 11th in Supercross.

It is true that in the hands of Joel Robert, Viktor Arbekov and Paul Friedrichs, CZ did dominate Grand Prix motocross for several years, but they were never going to win any World Championship with the 1972 CZ 125.
