As if this Supercross season hasn’t been bad enough already, Houston saw both Kevin Windham and James Stewart crash out of the night activities. They get a week off before New Orleans, to heal up.

BEN TOWNLEY SWEEPS OPENING ROUND OF AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS…AND THEN LEAVES FOR THE USA

The Australian National Motocross Championships might as well change their name to the “New Zealand National Motocross Championships” after Kiwis Ben Townley and Josh Coppins went one-two at round one in Conondale. This is scheduled as Townley’s only Australian race as he will replace Chad Reed in the AMA Nationals starting in May. Plus, the other hired guns from abroad didn’t get to play a major role in the 450 title chase. British champ Brad Anderson was fifth, while fellow expatriate Billy Mackenzie was tenth. Calle Aspegren, who had visa issues in the USA, suddenly appeared in Australia and finished 14th.

In the 250 class the racing was much closer between eventual winner Kirk Gibbs and fast qualifier Ford Dale. Third went to Luke Styke.

REM TO HOST 30-MINUTE PRO MOTOS TO HELP AMA PROS GET READY FOR THE 250/450 NATIONALS

REM starts its 30-minute Pro motos this weekend at Glen Helen. Until you go a full 30, you don’t know how hard those last five minutes are.

Every year season, REM holds long motos in the month leading up to the start of the AMA Nationals (this year at Hangtown) to help aspiring AMA National riders get ready for the long AMA motos. This year the 30-minute Pro motos start on Saturday, March 31. This is a really cool idea…and lots of local Pros come out to see how they would do over 30-minutes…as for AMA Nationals Pros, they don’t want to know what shape they are in after three months of 15-minute Supercross mains.

JESSICA PATTERSON FINALLY GETS A DEAL

Jessica.

Jessica Patterson, a six-time Women’s motocross Champion, has signed with the Rockstar Energy Suzuki team of Blake Wharton, Martin Davalos, Hunter Hewitt and Jason Anderson. Patterson did not get a deal after the end of last year’s Nationals, so the Rockstar Suzuki deal was a last-minute repieve. The first Women’s National is on May 19 at Hangtown.

AUSTIN HOWELL’S WORLD TWO-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP YZ250

MXA ran into the LightSpeed team at Glen Helen on Thursday when they were out testing their bikes for Sunday’s race. Austin Howell was one of the last full-time two-stroke hold-outs in the AMA Nationals, but when he got a Rockstar Suzuki ride at the end of 2010 he had to put his two-stroke away (Austin raced a RM250). Unfortunately at the race Austin fell and bent a shift fork in moto one.

Last year Austin won the Second Annual World Two-Stroke Championships (it replaced the defunct World Four-Stroke Championships on the season schedule in 2010). Austin took the win with a 1-1 in front of 2010 winner Bobby Garrison, Ryan Hughes, Doug Dubach and Dennis Stapleton. This year Michael Lieb took the win.

Austin’s Uncle, Willie Amaradio, owns LightSpeed which supplies Austin with full support for the two-stroke race and all the carbon fiber parts he needs. Austin will return to the AMA Supercross series when it returns to the west.

To get air into the airbox, Austin runs carbon fiber air vents on his airbox.

You can’t blame Americans for being totally absorbed in the AMA Supercross series at the moment. But, with only one major contender still on his feet, it is time to turn a few seconds of attention to the World Motocross Championships…or as it should be called “The Annual KTM Rout.” The GPs start on April 9.

WHO’S WHO IN EUROPE? HERE IS A QUICK RUNDOWN.

Team KTM: KTM has lots of riders, but the powerhouses are Antonio Cairoli in the 450 class and Jeffrey Herlings in the 250 class. Max Nagl will race the 450 class, but is injured and may miss a few rounds. Jeremy Van Horebeek and Jordi Tixier are Herlings back-up 250 riders.

Miscellaneous KTM riders include: In the 450 class, Kevin Strijbos, Mateo Bonini, David Guarneri, Nathan Parker, Lars Oldekamp and Matiss Karo. In the 250 class, Jose Burton, Julien Lieber, Pascal Rauchenecker and Jake Nicholls.

Team Honda: Honda team manager Roger Harvey may be a genius. He has found a way to take on the mighty KTM 450 team with riders that other teams either overlooked or threw away. Russian rider Evgeny Bobryshev could a dark horse. He seems to get better with each race and he is joined by Rui Goncalves on the 2013 Honda CRF450 prototypes.

Honda is also supporting the LS team Jonathan Barragan and Ken De Dycker in the 450 class…they are plodders, but can be consistent.

In the 250 class Honda will only have Max Anstie and Alexander Tonkov on the Gariboldi team and privateer Donny Bastemejier.

Team Yamaha: Budget cuts forced Michele Rinaldi to pare his team down and get help from Steve Dixon’s British squad. As a group they have David Philippaerts (450), Zach Osborne (250), Shaun Simpson(450), Steven Frossard (450), Arnaud Tonus (250) and Christophe Charlier (250).

Other Yamaha riders: Gregory Aranda will race the 450 class for Team 2B, while Alfie Smith will ride a YZ450F for JK Gebben. At the opening sand race in Valkensward, Yamaha will have a good sand rider in Herjan Brakke (also on JK Gebben).

Tanel Leok.

Team Suzuki: The once powerhouse Suzuki team may not have the cash that it once had, and its bikes may be getting a little long in the tooth, but they have Clement Desalle. Last year Desalle was running away with the 450 title…and then got hurt…came back…and got hurt again. Desalle is a contender and is backed up by Tanel Leok.

Suzuki’s best 250 riders are Harri Kullas and Petar Petrov.

Team Kawasaki: There two factory Kawasaki teams, the Pro Circuit one with Tommy Searle, Joel Roelants, Christophe Pourcel and Sebastien Pourcel. Plus, the official green team with Gautier Paulin and Xavier Boog. Kawasaki’s chances depend on which Christophe Pourcel shows up to race. In the 250 class. Searle will be backed up by Joel Roelants and both are solid in the 250 class, but Herlings and his KTM are the favorites.

Team Husqvarna: Alessandro Lupino and Nick Triest are both in the 250 class

Team TM: The smallest factory team is going to war with Anthony Boissiere in the 450 class and Nick Louwenberg in the 250 class.

Your points lead is so big now, have you thought about taking a couple weeks off and then just coming back for Seattle?
Ryan: No! There are no more domed stadiums after Houston and New Orleans. So, we’ll go to Houston. I think there’s a chance to wrap it up there. That’s the plan. Then it’s no more pressure? Not until Hangtown?

As far as your racing life, what’s it all like for you right now?
It’s good. It’s tough. I think you get put into a weird situation. Not to say that all these other guys weren’t trying before at the beginning of the season, but obviously when a lot of the top guys go out they see an opportunity to get second and third, and possibly the win if I make a mistake. So, it seems like they step their game up and then I’m put into a position where I just don’t make any mistakes and don’t push it. You really don’t have to ride as hard as you normally would. It’s like you get a mixed feeling. I wouldn’t say that I haven’t raced with these guys all year, because I don’t want to sound cocky, but I shouldn’t be racing with these guys. It’s just weird. You get put in a weird situation when you have a points lead and you don’t want to make a mistake. You tend to ride cautiously.

Who is AMA National number 981? Austin Politelli. Austin is one of 293 professional racers (up to this point, but by the end of the AMA Nationals the number of licensed Pros could reach 600). There is a problem though. No one knows any number after the top 100…actually after the top 14.
