COLTON HAAKER WINS ATLANTA ENDUROCROSS

Colton Haaker - AMA EnduroCross Championship, Rd1Colton Haaker takes round one.

The 2016 AMA EnduroCross Championship Series kicked off with a bang inside the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth, Georgia and Colton Haaker fired the first shot in the battle for the championship. The Husqvarna rider passed Taddy Blazusiak on lap two and slowly edged away from the field. KTM’s Cody Webb finished second and Blazusiak recovered from a mistake on lap four to take the final podium spot.

Mike Brown - AMA EnduroCross Championship, Rd1Mike Brown.

“I’m pumped to get the season off to a winning start. You just never know how things are going to turn out at round one, so I’m more than happy that it all came together like this. I felt things started a little shaky during my practice and heat race but in a way that sort of ironed things out for me. When the night program came around I won the Hot Laps and I knew with a solid start I could be in the hunt. I stayed out of trouble during those first two laps of the main event, got around Taddy cleanly and then went to work. To pick up the EnduroCross series where I left off the SuperEnduro Championship by winning is fantastic and I’m excited for the rest of the season.”

DUTCH GRAND PRIX: HERLINGS IS BACK, GAJSER CRASHES OUT

DESALLE_GP16_PH_3961You gotta feel happy for Clement Desalle. He has spent his whole career in the shadow of Tony Cairoli and made the switch from Suzuki to Kawasaki is hopes of reversing that trend. Unfortunately, he broke his arm before the season started and rode injured. His win at Assen was  a big boost for the long suffering bridesmaid.

gajserb9eTim Gajser only need one point more than Tony Cairoli to clinch the 450 World Championship (to go with his 2015 250 World Championship). Unfortunately, Gajser whiskey-throttled his bike into the grandstand retaining wall and broke his throttle cable. He still has a massive points lead with two rounds to go.

These bikes are in short supply and the only existing ones are pre-pros (because of earthquake damage to the Honda factory in Japan).

WHAT TIM GAJSER NEEDS TO DO IN CHARLOTTE TO BE WORLD CHAMP

Gajser_MXGP_9_ESP_2016Tim Gajser’s crash in Holland stopped his victory celebration in its tracks. He heads to Charlotte and Glen Helen with a 65 point lead over Tony Cairoli.

Tim Gajser has a 65-point lead in the 450 World Standings standings. All he has to do in Charlotte is stay within 15 points of Tony Cairoli, regradless of what anyone else does and he will be the 2016 FIM 450 World Champion. Charlotte is an unknown quantity to the GP riders—since it is man-made track in a dirt track oval. Gajser doesn’t want to take the title chase to the final round at Glen Helen. He took his 2015 250 World Championship battle to Glen Helen and struggled on the famously difficult track and the won the title with poor moto score but only because his competition did worse on the big hills.

With 100 points left to be earned in the 450 World Championship, Gajser has a 65-point lead over Cairoli, 111 points over Nagl and 131 over Febvre. That means that no matter what happens—only Gajser or Cairoli are in the running.

The 2016 AMA National Motocross Championships are over. Ken Roczen was unbeatable from the first race and he did what no other serious contender could do in the 450 class — which was to avoid getting hurt. Roczen won 9 of the 12 rounds. Cooper Webb wasn’t as dominant in the first half of the 250 series, but reeled off four wins out of the12 races (and avoided the engine failures, crashes and injuries that stopped his title contenders).

THE WAY WE WERE: THE WAY WE WORE

hallmncatIf you raced in the 1970s this is how you aspired to look. Hallman goat skin pants, open face helmet, Jofa dangling and a Hallman GP chest protector were the cool thinsg to have. This young man did quite well for himself, but by 1977 this look was gone from the sport—replaced by nylon pants, plastic chest protectors and full-face helmets.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE

1985fourstrokeThis was the starting line at the World Four-Stroke Championships at Carlsbad 30 years ago.  That is Johnny O’Mara on the far right on a Honda. A close look at the line reveals one Honda, One Husqvarna and one Yamaha—the rest of the field is mounted on blue-framed ATK 604s. Even O’Mara’s bike was a one-off ATK copy.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO MXA AND MAKE MONEY

MXASEPT2016COVER003Interested in two-strokes? The September 2016 issue of MXA will be on the news stands soon, but if you subscribed you would get a $25 gift certificate from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC.

Do you subscribe to MXA? You should. We know that you think that print magazines are dead and that the internet will fill the void, but most of the stuff in the current issue of MXA won’t appear on the web for several months, if at all. Luckily, you can get all of MXA on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Android by going to the Apple Store, Amazon or Google Play. Better yet get the Digital desktop version at https://hi-torque.com/product/motocross-action-digital-edition/ for $9.99 a year. The MXA test riders prefer the print version and not just because it is delivered by a uniformed employee of the U.S. Government, but because for only $19.99 you get 12 issues and a free $25 Gift Card from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. That means that there is a profit to be made in this deal for you. For the Print magazine go to: http://hi-torque.com/product/subscribe-to-motocross-action-magazine/
